Hidden Bats (カクレコウモリ, Kakure Koumori) is a real-time mystery Alternate Reality Game produced by Spike Chunsoft as part of their promotion for AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative.
It is a standalone sequel to the Lemniscate YouTube series, the first ARG of the series released in 2019, taking place in the same continuity and sharing the same iterations of characters. It officially began on May 5th, 2022, with the launch of the Sunaiku Foundation website, although various elements were laid out months in advance. It officially concluded on June 15th, 2022, but the final “Nirvana Spell” was revealed on June 24th with the release of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative.
On May 5th, 2022, the website for Sunaiku Foundation was tweeted out by the Spike Chunsoft account, while the account for A-set quote-tweeted an account called "Hidden Bats". The Sunaiku Foundation website featured news articles that have been published since April 1st, 2022, while the PATRONS page revealed a countdown atop a 3x3 stack of CRT televisions, the center one revealing the video Bats489, originally uploaded to a Hidden Bats YouTube channel on January 6th.
How To Play
The rules of real-time Hidden Bats are as follows:
- Communicate with two missing persons to save them.
- The missing persons have access to smartphones. These can only be used at a set time, once every two days for 21 minutes. The missing persons will be able to provide information and codes via Twitter. Once the information is provided, players must respond via Twitter with the proper password within two days to proceed.
- Follow the official Twitter accounts of Hidden Bats and the two missing persons. The official Twitter accounts of Hidden Bats and each of the two missing persons will provide information about the case, the missing persons themselves, and the mysterious images that serve as a code.
- Refer to the Sunaiku Foundation website for information on the missing persons cases. The Sunaiku Foundation is an organization that provides support to bring missing persons cases to their resolution. The site includes information on cases involving Hidden Bats. The Sunaiku Foundation Official Site: https://sunaiku-foundation.com/
- Decipher the code based on a hint video to obtain a password. Using video from a certain source as a hint, decipher the code presented by the missing persons.
- Reply with the password to the missing person on Twitter. Send the correct password as a reply to the missing person on Twitter.
Due to the sporadic nature of this "real-time mystery" game told through multiple sites and posts over time, this page will act as a tool for players to catch up and/or experience the game in its proper order independently of the game's real-time nature. When you reach an Experiment section, use the tabs to progress on each day of the experiment, use the clues provided in the video below, and enter the password onto the Sunaiku Foundation website (specifically the Hidden Bats section).
The passwords, or "Nirvana Spells" will be obscured but provided to players who can't solve or don't want to solve the puzzles. Click "Expand" to view the password, along with an explanation on how to obtain the clue. Enter the password on the "Answer" monitor in the website, and you will be given a results screen with a number code and new information. If the website isn't operating normally, this page also has the results screen as a separate toggle, available just below the password for each puzzle.
Bats489 Video and Clues
The video hidden in the website is called Bats489. Over the course of over 3 minutes, a series of letters, numbers, colored animals, and various symbols are laid out. These different symbols are attributed to certain codes that must be used to solve the puzzles presented in Hidden Bats. Watch the video for yourself over to the right. Below the list of clues are laid out in the order they appear, and below that a chart lays out the matching patterns with the animals.

Characters
Various characters are included as part of the story of Hidden Bats.
The kidnapped victims are seemingly young adults who are kidnapped in pairs of two:
- Aine Ichirai - A high school student from Saitama Prefecture. She was kidnapped by the organization conducting the Experiments, reported missing on May 6th, 2022.
- Binato Sotobara - A university student from Saitama Prefecture. He was kidnapped by the organization conducting the Experiments, reported missing on May 6th, 2022.
- Mariha Monzen - A university student from Kanagawa Prefecture. She was kidnapped by the organization conducting the Experiments, reported missing on May 18th, 2022.
- Lumina Rikujo - A university student from Kanagawa Prefecture. She was kidnapped by the organization conducting the Experiments, reported missing on May 18th, 2022.
- Kairo Goshiki - A self employed man from Tokyo. He was kidnapped by the organization conducting the Experiments, reported missing on May 30th, 2022.
- "Missing Person A" - A missing person rescued by the Sunaiku Foundation's Missing Persons Task Force on April 13th, 2022, at the mountains of Chichibu City. They are implied to have survived an Experiment by the mysterious organization. Their real name is withheld to protect their identity.
The participants of Hidden Bats interact with the Experiment in the hopes of rescuing the victims:
- The Player - The fans of the AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES series, as in You! They solve the puzzles and provide the answers to the victims. The fans that directly replied to the puzzles and casted their votes during the events of the Experiment contributed to the progress and potential rescue of these victims.
- Iris Sagan (Alpha Timeline) - Known as the net idol A-set, a returning character from the Lemniscate YouTube series. Returned to To-Witter after a long hiatus, began to participate in the Experiments from the start to help rescue the victims.
- Ota Matsushita (Prime/Alpha Timelines) - A NEET otaku, a fan and friend of A-set, and a returning character from the Lemniscate YouTube series. Returned to To-Witter after a long hiatus during the last few days of Experiment 2, and began participating in the Experiments to rescue the victims.
The Hidden Bats Experiments are hosted in the website for the Sunaiku Foundation, which is implied to be the organization conducting these Experiments in the first place. The organization is run by the following people:
- Kagura Iwato - President of Sunaiku Foundation, appointed on April 1st, 2022. Eighteen days later, on April 19th, Iwato is reported to have mysteriously gone missing.
- Hasumi Kisaragi - Chairman of the Board for Sunaiku Foundation.
- Hatsushi Kusama - Vice President of Sunaiku Foundation. Presumably assumes a temporary position as President following Kagura Iwato's disappearance.
- Nikai Kuon - Director of Sunaiku Foundation at their Headquarters in Akasaka, Minato District, Tokyo.
- Polly B. Mary - Branch Director of Sunaiku Foundation's Branch Office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
Additionally, Akira Okada, Director of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative, works undercover in the organization kidnapping the victims as a janitor. He provides small anecdotes on the workings of the organization, but the information he provides does not directly affect the story of Hidden Bats. - Sunaiku Foundation is pleased to announce that Kagura Iwato has been appointed to the position of President effective April 1st. Below are Iwato's remarks on the appointment:
- "The primary goal of the Sunaiku Foundation is to assist in solving missing persons cases that can cause so much misery and sadness. As representative of the Foundation, I intend to fulfill my duty to this noble cause.
- For all those who want their loved ones back in their lives. For all the missing whose one wish is to return home. I will lead this Foundation with the utmost effort to bring them peace."

On Wednesday April 13th, a news report was released:
- Missing Person A Found and Rescued
- Earlier today, our Missing Persons Task Force found and rescued an individual who was reported missing (hereafter referred to as "A" to protect their identity) in the mountains of Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture. A was delivered to the police and emergency services after their rescue. We have been told they are in good health both physically and mentally, and their family has been contacted.
- We are proud that our actions led to this favorable outcome. We will continue to find missing persons with renewed vigor and resolve.
On Tuesday April 19th, a news report was released:
- Disappearance of President Kagura Iwato
- Sunaiku Foundation would like to comment on the emerging news that President Kagura Iwato has gone missing. We regretfully must confirm the reports are true. We have already filed a missing persons report to law enforcement.
- Our Missing Persons Task Force is coordinating with the police to aid the effort to find Iwato.
- If anyone has any pertinent information, no matter how minor or inconsequential it may seem, please contact the foundation immediately.
