For the original cold case, see Original Cyclops Serial Killings

The New Cyclops Serial Killings were a series of events that occurred in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and alluded to in the Lemniscate YouTube series.

They are a set of murders committed by an unknown individual named the New Cyclops Killer, sometimes also referred to as the Bloody Polar Bear. The one significant trait in the killer's M.O. is that they gouge out one of their victims' eyes, particularly the left eye, and leave the bodies out for display at different locations. This case bears many striking similarities to a previous case from 6 years prior, known as the Original Cyclops Serial Killings.

The Advanced Brain Investigation Squad are the lead investigators in this case. The case ran from November 1st to November 6th, 2019, and, depending of the timeline, had an incident occur at most once per day. The case was prematurely concluded in the Mizuki Route, left unsolved in the Ota Route, Iris Route, and Annihilation Route, and ultimately solved and concluded in the Resolution Route.

People Involved[]

The following are the people involved within the New Cyclops Serial Killing case, as officially recognized by the Metropolitan Police Department and the media.

Official Case Results[]

In the Ota Route, the case remains unsolved as the culprit is never apprehended (as far as the Route has shown) with a lack of suspects. Previous suspects throughout the case include Mizuki Okiura and Renju Okiura for the murder of Shoko Nadami, Iris Sagan for the murder of Renju Okiura, and Ota and Mayumi Matsushita for the attempted murder of Iris Sagan. Renju and Iris were removed as suspects due to Renju's death and Iris's incident, Mizuki was removed for outside testimony and contradictory evidence, Ota was removed due to newfound evidence and exploration through his Somnium, and Mayumi was removed due to a consistent alibi. While the case remains unsolved as far as the story could tell, it's possible that Iris Sagan, the only surviving target, was reinstated as a suspect, due to newfound evidence, but any further developments in the case are currently unconfirmed.

In the Mizuki Route, the culprit is determined to be So Sejima, charged posthumously for the first degree murders of Shoko Nadami and Renju Okiura, attempted first degree murder of Iris Sagan, and attempted second degree murder Ota Matsushita. He was most likely also charged with child kidnapping over the restraint of Mizuki Okiura, along with other crimes associated with the use of firearms and armed security. So Sejima was killed during a firefight with Tokyo MPD Special Agent Kaname Date at his home during the latter's attempt to detain Sejima as a suspect (the lack of an arrest warrant or legal capacity for arrest is seemingly glossed over in the official A.B.I.S. report by Shizue Kuranushi).

In the Annihilation Route, the case's development remains unclear, as the story concluded before any official charges could be made. Special Agent Kaname Date was officially charged as the New Cyclops Killer by ABIS captain Shizue Kuranushi, but escaped before being apprehended. It's likely that Kaname Date* was ultimately officially arrested as the New Cyclops Killer for the murders of Shoko Nadami, Renju Okiura, Iris Sagan, Ota Matsushita, So Sejima, and Hitomi Sagan, and potentially for the assault on Shizue Kuranushi and the Special Assault Team at the Sagan Residence.

History[]

The Previous Case[]

The original Cyclops Serial Killings occurred sometime during the year 2013, in which four young women were murdered and later found in Akikawa Valley. The culprit of this case had removed the right eye of each of their victims, and they sent a note to the media that said "I am Cyclops". The culprit of this case was never apprehended, and the original Cyclops Killings are considered a cold case. It is unclear whether the culprit of the original Killings is the same as the culprit of these new Killings. However, due to the key difference between the previous case and the new case, being that the victims of the original case had their right eyes removed, while the victims of the new case had their left eyes removed, the police initially believed the New Cyclops Killings to be the work of a copycat killer.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the police force, the Advanced Brain Investigation Squad knew through previous investigation that the Original Cyclops Serial Killings were performed by Saito Sejima and Rohan Kumakura, the former actually doing the killing while the latter removed the right eyes of the victims. However, they kept the details of the case private due to a private deal between the commander of ABIS, Shizue Kuranushi, and Saito's father, Congressman So Sejima, where they agreed that Saito being the Cyclops Serial Killer would never be revealed to the public under the condition that So would allow Kaname Date, who was now a parasite mind inside the body of Saito, to continue working with them. As So knew Saito's crimes being exposed would ruin his political career and public image, he readily accepted the deal. ABIS also believed the New Cyclops Serial Killings to be the work of a copycat killer, as they had believed it impossible for Rohan or Saito to be involved, as the former was behind bars as Inmate No. 89, a parasite mind in Falco's body, while the latter was last known to be in Rohan's body and was presumed to have committed suicide a year prior to the beginning of the New Cyclops Serial Killings.

The First Murder[]

In 2018, Saito Sejima, who was a parasite in Rohan's body, regained all of his memories of his previous life, and escaped the mental hospital he was being confined in. Out of a desire to reclaim his original body, as he was addicted to the rush of dopamine and endorphins his original brain would give him whenever he killed, he came up with a plan to reclaim said body. He contacted Shoko Nadami, and asked her to visit him at the Kabasaki Chemical Plant. He performed a Psync with her using the Prototype Psync Machine, causing them to swap bodies: Saito wound up in Shoko's body, while Shoko was in Rohan's body. Shoko awoke from the Psync and after looking in the mirror, she panicked when she realized she was inhabiting Rohan's body. While confused and disoriented, she ran up the emergency staircase to the rooftop and jumped, committing suicide in the process.

Saito then proceeded to use Shoko's body for the next year to spy on the person who was currently inhabiting his original body, Kaname Date, and learned everything about his life. Bearing a grudge against Date for "stealing" his body six years prior (not knowing the swap was his idea originally), he came up with a plan to systematically ruin Date's life before attracting him to reclaim his original body from him, which involved killing everyone he was close with. His first target was ultimately Renju Okiura, who was Date's best friend as well as Shoko's ex-wife. He contacted Renju and brought him to the Chemical Plant, and proceeded to Psync to swap bodies with him: in the process, both bodies had their left eyes removed due to the Prototype Psync Machine requiring that both Psyncer and subject remove their left eyes. After the swap was successful, Saito, now in Renju's body, swallowed Shoko's eye and reinserted Renju's eye into his socket, then proceeded to use an ice pick to stab Shoko's body to death: as Renju in Shoko's body was still under the influence of the sedatives, he was unable to fight back.

Saito, still under the guise of Renju, brought Shoko's dead body to Bloom Park, and pinned it to a horse on the carousel. He also grabbed her burner phone and placed it in the mouth of the horse, then stabbed the ice pick into Shoko's now empty eye socket. He then contacted Mizuki Okiura, the now deceased Renju's daughter, though NILE, giving her the message "Daddy got caught in something serious" and asking her to visit Bloom Park. Mizuki, fearful of what would happen, came to the park, but brought her friend Ota Matsushita to accompany her. The two arrived and discovered Shoko's corpse, but Ota panicked and fled the scene. He dropped his phone in a puddle in the process, so he called the police about Shoko's corpse through a nearby payphone. Mizuki meanwhile pulled the ice pick out of Shoko's corpse, then immediately saw an unknown person nearby. She was scared of what the unknown person would do, and so immediately hid inside the center of the merry-go-round and locked the door.

Soon after this, the police arrived on the scene, chief among them the ABIS members Shizue Kuranushi, aka Boss, and their lead Psyncer Kaname Date. The police would then proceed to dub this case as the New Cyclops Serial Killings due to the similarities it had to the previous murder case six years prior.

A: Murder of Iris Sagan[]

Saito, now in Renju's body, decides to make Iris Sagan his next target, At 5:00 PM on November 2, 2019, Saito contacts Iris and asks Iris to visit him at Sunfish Pocket. As he was inhabiting the body of Renju Okiura, president of Lemniscate and Iris's personal manager, Iris did not initially suspect anything as Saito asked Iris to come with him. Unbeknownst to Saito, Ota Matsushita witnessed him and Iris enter Renju's car together. Iris entered Renju's car, and Saito made Iris take a sedative while he proceeded to take her to the Chemical Plant. From there, he used the Prototype Psync Machine to swap bodies with Iris, leaving her in Renju's body while Saito entered Iris's body. After the swap, Saito ate Renju's left eyeball, reinserted Iris's left eye into her socket, and then grabbed a rolled up apron to strangle Iris in Renju's body, killing her in the process.

Saito then put Renju's lifeless body inside an empty oil drum that he had prepared, placed the oil drum in Renju's car, then drove to Sunfish Pocket. In an unexpected turn of events, while Saito was waiting for traffic, Ota stopped by to talk to him, not knowing that it was Saito in Iris's body. Ota was surprised to see "Iris" driving, and asked if Iris had a driver's license. Saito, in the heat of the moment, came up with a lie, telling Ota that "she" didn't have a license, so he had to keep it a secret. He escaped the situation, then headed to Sunfish Pocket. Saito grabbed the oil drum, carried it to the second floor via elevator, then hung Renju's lifeless corpse using a hook and three beer kegs as counterweights. Later that evening, Renju's corpse would be discovered by Kaname Date and Mizuki Okiura. This would be reported as the murder of Renju Okiura.

While Saito performed a podcast the next day as Iris, Date discovered through investigation that the elevator of Sunfish Pocket carried a certain amount of pounds the night before, and combining the weight of an oil drum, Renju's known weight, and Iris's known weight, cast suspicion on Iris, albeit not knowing it was Saito in Iris's body. He approached Saito after he pretended to act as Iris at the lobby of Lemniscate, and brought him to ABIS for questioning. In the midst of the interrogation, Saito used NILE to contact Ota, but Date caught him using said phone and under Boss's command, Date proceeded to Psync with Saito.

AA: Attempted Murder of So Sejima[]

Saito was interrogated by Date about the events in his Somnium. He denied knowing So Sejima, or what "that thing" in the NILE conversation with Ota was about. Date contacted Ota for more information, and the latter agreed to give information but asked Date to come to Matsushita Diner. During the drive there, Saito reached out to Ota via NILE and asked for his help in escaping Date's custody. Upon arriving at the diner, Ota, under Saito's command, knocks Date out with a wok and helps Saito escape, while the latter secretly takes a chance to steal Mayumi's floral kitchen knife.

While in the car, Saito asked Ota to stop at a nearby convenience store for a drink. Ota stopped at the store, leaving Saito in the car. Saito pretended to scream for help, then got in the driver's seat, using Iris's sleeves to cover his fingerprints, and drove to the Sejima residence. Using the intercom, he contacted his father, So Sejima, and asked So to come with him. So hesitated but agreed, and together they drove to the Chemical Plant. He used the Prototype Psync Machine to swap bodies with So, leaving So in Iris's body, while Saito became a parasite in his father's body. He reinserted So's left eye into So's eye socket and then ate Iris's removed left eyeball. Saito then donned a polar bear costume to conceal his face. So, still under the effect of the sedatives from the Prototype Psync machine, was taken by Saito and carried to Okiura Fishery Cold Storage Warehouse. Saito placed So underneath the ice cutting machine in the warehouse, then proceeded to create a stream using a PC to broadcast his attempt to kill "Iris" publicly, in hopes that Kaname Date would witness it. However, Ota Matsushita managed to catch up with Saito and charged into the warehouse, attempting to stop "The Polar Bear" Saito from killing Iris. He successfully stops the ice cutter, then intervenes by injuring Saito, either by stabbing him, or by using a crane hook to injure Saito's left leg. In the process, Saito manages to injure Ota by stabbing him in the stomach, but he is left heavily injured and is forced to escape, especially as Date arrives on the scene and gets both Iris and Ota to the hospital.

AAA: Murder of Boss[]

Saito, in So's body, proceeds to escape. He contacts Shizue Kuranushi, aka Boss, shortly before noon the next day, while Date is busy investigation leads on who the polar bear could be. Using So's body, he convinces Boss to come with him, and uses sedatives to put her to sleep as he carries her to the Chemical Plant. He switches bodies with Boss, leaving the latter in So's body and Saito in Boss's body. He then proceeds to shoot Boss in the head using a gun, then slices So's body to pieces, killing Boss on the spot. He stuffs So's dismembered body into a vase he brought from the Sejima residence, and tightly closes it with a nailed lid. He then brings the body back to the Sejima residence. This body is eventually discovered by Kaname Date, who visits the Sejima residence and catches an unusual smell, and he contacts MPD to investigate the scene. Saito then resumes life pretending to be Shizue Kuranushi. Later, the police discovers footage of "Iris" stealing Mayumi's kitchen knife as well as a partially digested eyeball in Renju's digestive system. However, the case remains unsolved, and no one discovers any leads on who the killer truly is.

AAB: Vigilante[]

Later, Saito, who is still suffering from the injury to So's leg, is caught at the Harbor Warehouse District in So's body by Date while the latter is talking to an inspector at the scene. Date catches this detail, and later uses So's previous visit to the Kumakura office to further attain evidence, and discovers the cigarette that So Sejima had smoked during his previous visit. Date sends this cigarette to the police department to obtain DNA samples. After some hours, the police manage to match the DNA samples from the cigarette to So Sejima. However, none of the police are aware that the "So" who attempted to murder "Iris" was actually Saito in So's body.

In a panic, Saito uses So's influence over the MPD to shut down the investigation and take Date off the case. He also takes Mizuki hostage, hires several men to tie her up and put her inside a radio in Date's home, and also leaves behind a note threatening Date to stop investigating or else Mizuki will die.

Mizuki and Date, having identified the assailant as So, head to the Sejima residence, and use their combat skills to take down So Sejima's army of bodyguards. Saito kidnaps Mizuki and sprays her with tear gas. He holds her hostage and when Date arrives at the residence to rescue her, Saito threatens to kill Mizuki if Date comes any closer. Date shoots him at the side, crippling him and freeing Mizuki. Saito shot at them, but Date shields Mizuki and pushes her out of the way, and as Saito fires a second shot, Date shields the blow with Aiba, and the bullet ultimately hits Aiba and damages her, causing her to become dysfunctional. Saito attempts to shoot Mizuki in hopes of adding her to the case's death tally, but Date quickly regains consciousness and shoots Saito, killing him instantly.

As Saito was inhabiting So's body, and no one had known about Saito swapping bodies with his victims, So Sejima is ultimately retroactively declared the New Cyclops Killer in this route.

AB: Murder of So Sejima and Boss, Reveal of the True Culprit[]

After the Psync, Date asks Saito about his knowledge of the Original Cyclops Serial Killings, but Saito dodged the question by claiming he had only heard about it on the news beforehand. Date agreed to release him due to lack of evidence, and Saito asked Date to drop him off at Marble. On the ride there, Saito uses NILE to ask Ota to help him escape Date's custody. As soon as they arrive at Marble, Ota arrives and uses a taser to shock Date from behind, knocking him unconscious, while Saito escapes with Ota.

The events from there on play out similarly as in Path AA, however, unlike in Path AA, Saito successfully kills So Sejima in Iris's body using the ice cutter machine. Despite Ota's attempts to intervene, Saito stabs him in the stomach, then uses the ice cutting machine to saw Iris's body in half, killing So Sejima in the process. After killing Iris, Saito, having become frustrated with Ota's repeated attempts to intervene in his crimes, proceeds to place Ota in the polar bear costume, then uses the ice cutter on him to dismember his body and add him to the case's death tally.

Much like in Path AAA, So Sejims then proceeds to contact Boss and swaps bodies with her, and kills her in the same manner as in Path AAA. However, in this route, So's body is discovered by the police while Date is interrogating Inmate No. 89, and Date discovers that Saito streamed "So's" murder and made it a file in Boss's computer. Saito also arrives at the Sagan Residence, kidnaps Hitomi, and takes her to Boss's house and ties her to a chair while strapping bombs on her and preparing a livestream. He then heads to the Sagan Residence.

Date corners Saito at the residence shortly after 1:00 AM, but Saito uses a team of SAT officers to confront Date and accuse him of being the New Cyclops Killer. Date manages to use a bag of flour and explosives to injure Boss's right shoulder and left leg, knocking Saito out in the process. He then brings Saito to ABIS to Psync with him.

After the Psync, Date realizes the truth behind the New Cyclops Serial Killings, and Saito confesses everything to him, including his motives and his personal grudge against Date. He asks Date to Psync with him to swap bodies so he can reclaim his original body, using Hitomi as leverage, saying he will tell Date where Hitomi is if the latter gives him back his original body. Date reluctantly agrees. After the swap, Saito, back in his original body, tells Date that Hitomi is at Boss's house, but proceeds to detonate the bombs anyway, killing her on the spot. He gleefully brags over his victory, but is given a paralyzing electric shock by Aiba.

What became of Saito after this revelation is unknown, but it is presumed that he is arrested for his several murders and rightfully declared the New Cyclops Killer.

B: Fatal Car Accident[]

Saito attempts to contact Iris Sagan at 5:00 PM on November 2, 2019, just as in Path A. However, 8 minutes before he called, Kaname Date called Iris telling her not to go anywhere, and to lock all doors and remain at home. Because of this warning, Iris does not accept Saito's proposition. Saito, having his plans thrown into a wrench because of this, decides to visit Iris's house personally to contact her face to face, thinking he could get Iris to trust her that way. However, at 6:10 PM, on the way to Iris's house, Saito gets caught in a violent car accident in the middle of the highway and lost consciousness.

Saito, in Renju's body, was taken to Central Hospital. The doctors proceeded to do surgery on Renju's body to prolong his lifespan, but were unable to fully heal him as the car accident left Renju's organs in critical condition. Saito regained consciousness just past 12:00 AM the following day. He left the hospital, rented a new car, and headed to Iris's house. At 1:30 AM, he came to Iris and pressed the intercom, asking her to come with him, using his body's horribly weakened state to fake a sense of desperation. Iris agreed to come, but as Saito's sedatives were still in Renju's damaged car, he was unable to put Iris to sleep on the way to the Chemical Plant. As such, Iris was awake along the journey and upon realizing where they were going, became fearful and ran away from the Chemical Plant. As Renju's organs was in a horribly weakened state, combined with the fact that his body was still under the influence of the painkillers the doctors administered to him, he lacked sufficient stamina to chase after Iris. Saito managed to make it into the Chemical Plant and collapsed on the ground, falling asleep to properly rest.

Saito woke up at 12:00 noon the next day. He was in a panic, as his plan had been thoroughly ruined and Renju's body was on the verge of death due to the damage his organs had sustained. Suddenly, Futa Amanoma, aka Pewter, who was Renju's lover, called "Renju" over the phone to talk, explaining to him that #89 had been brought to ABIS for questioning. Saito used this to his advantage, knowing he could use this as a chance to escape Renju's body, and asked if there was any way they could have #89 (who was Rohan as a parasite mind in Falco's body) escape. Pewter pretended to be Rohan's hostage in the interrogation room while Rohan escaped the room, and Saito came to pick Rohan up. The two talked on the way to the Chemical Plant, and Saito immediately used the Prototype Psync machine to swap bodies with Rohan, causing Saito to end up in Falco's body, while Rohan entered Renju's dying body. Within minutes of the Psync, Renju's body ultimately expired, leading to the death of Rohan's personality with it.

BB: Case Solved[]

Saito took advantage of the fact that he was now in Falco's body. Knowing that Iris trusted the original person who inhabited Falco's body, and that said person, Kaname Date, was a parasite inside what was Saito's original body, he came up with a plan to achieve his ultimate goal of reclaiming his original body back from Date. He called Iris via video chat, and asked her to come visit him at the Chemical Plant. Iris, excited to see what was presumably her long lost father figure, agreed without hesitation. Saito picked up Iris and put her to sleep in the car, then held her hostage at the Chemical Plant. During this, he explained to Iris the truth about the body swap, including the fact that her "Uncle" who had originally inhabited Falco's body was in fact Kaname Date, and that he was intent on using her as hostage to lure him in. Saito then called Hitomi, using a voice modulator to conceal his voice, telling her "I have your daughter. Don't call the police or she dies." He also called her telling her to come to the Chemical Plant and to bring Date with her. She complied, and the two of them came to the Chemical Plant together.

Saito then restrained Hitomi and held her hostage, while he confronted Date and used a taser to knock him unconscious. While Date was unconscious, Saito tied him to the Prototype Psync Machine. As Date woke up, he realized that he was confronting Saito Sejima. Date also realizes that #89's body is his true body, and that the body he was currently inhabiting originally belonged to Saito. Saito decides to confess everything to Date with the intent of angering him and seeing him mad. After a while, Saito proceeds to Psync with Date, with the intent of swapping bodies: as such, both of them returned to their original bodies. While Date was imbued with a sedative, he regained all of his memories of his previous life before he became a parasite mind in Saito's body as Kaname Date. Saito filled in the remaining gaps in Date's memories, and reveals his intention to kill Iris and Hitomi in front of him in hopes of seeing Date suffer with his own eyes.

Date attempts to counterattack against Saito, but in an unexpected twist of events, Aiba managed to reach out to Moma Kumakura, Mizuki Okiura, and Ota Matsushita, who arrive at the Chemical Plant. She also informs all three of them about the body swap and Date's true face. Moma immediately jumps in and fights Saito but suffers an injury in the process. Date then chases Saito down and meets Iris, who is held at gunpoint by Saito. Date is lost on what to do in order to save Iris, but Mizuki and Ota arrive on the scene, with the latter using a metal pipe to attack Saito, while Ota manages to untie Iris and free her. Saito shoots Mizuki in the leg, and gets into a brief fight with Date who sends Saito flying. Saito quickly leaves for the control room to attempt to kill Hitomi, and the rest of the group rushes to the top floor to confront him.

Saito threatens to kill Hitomi at gunpoint. Date contemplates shooting Saito to end his life before he can kill Hitomi, but Saito threatens him by telling him he only has one shot or else he will kill Hitomi on the spot. Upon realizing he cannot aim with only one eye, Date decides not to do so. Saito then asks Date to throw down his weapon within 60 seconds. Aiba reaches out to Date, revealing the only last-resort measure they have against Saito: the self-destruct function. Date, hesitant to want to let go of Aiba, drops his weapon, but then Saito ridicules him and reveals he will now kill Moma, Mizuki, Ota, and Iris in addition to Hitomi. Realizing he has no choice, Date activates Aiba's self-destruct function, causing the latter to self-destruct inside Saito's eye socket and blowing his head off, killing him instantly.

The case is officially solved despite Saito's death, and Saito is officially declared by the police as both the Original and New Cyclops Killer. Saito's involvement in both cases becomes public knowledge, and the media also reveals that Saito's father is Congressman So Sejima. The latter's reputation is irreparably damaged as the media disgraces him for being the father of a psychopathic serial killer, and his political career ends as a result.

Trivia[]

  • The term Cyclops Serial Killings was one of the keywords featured on the official website (prior to the redesign) for AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES. This was in allusion to either the original serial killings or the new serial killings.
    • In the announcement trailer for the game, the term "Serial Killer Cyclops" is associated with the same Japanese phrase used for Cyclops Serial Killings (サイクロプス連続殺人). This may mean that one of these two versions is a mistranslation of the term. However, considering "Serial Killings" has been officially used in media for this series, that means "Serial Killer" is the one mistranslated, assuming the terms are not interchangeable in Japanese.
  • In the sequel, AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative, which takes place following the Resolution Route, the case is described by the name "New Cyclops Serial Killings," despite the fact that the case is never referred to as the New Cyclops Serial Killings during the events of the first game's Branch B, which includes the Resolution Route. This suggests that the case was named into this after the events of Day 6: Wednesday —hakAI—, where the second and final victim is officially reported to the case.
