For the new string of murders in 2019, see New Cyclops Serial Killings

The Original 2013 Cyclops Serial Killings (サイクロプス連続殺人, Saikuropusu Renzoku Satsujin, lit. Cyclops Serial Murder) was an event that occurred in the universe of the series, mentioned on the Lemniscate YouTube series and AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES.

The 2013 Cyclops Serial Killings case was perpetrated by an unknown culprit named the Cyclops. The notable aspect of these murders is that the victims were 4 young women who have had their right eyes gouged out and were dumped on the Akikawa Valley.

A similar set of events occurred in 2019, referred to as the New Cyclops Serial Killings.

Case Report[]

The Case[]

The original Cyclops Serial Killings occurred between May and September during the year 2013, in which four young women were murdered, and then later found in Akikawa Valley in October of that same year. The culprit of this case had removed the right eye from each of their victims, and they sent a note to the media that said "I killed them, and they are now my dear companions. –I am Cyclops". The culprit of this case was never apprehended, and the original Cyclops Killings is considered a cold case.

Legacy[]

On November 1st, 2019, a brand new string of murders began occurring all throughout Tokyo, Japan, by a brand new culprit. In these murders, the victim's left eyes were removed before death, and their bodies disposed of in elaborate methods and ways. After several days of investigations, depending on the timeline, the truth of the New case was solved, as well as the truth of the original Cyclops Killer.

The Culprits' Past[]

The true identities of the two culprits involved are Saito Sejima and Rohan Kumakura. The former was the actually murderous half of the duo, while the latter was responsible for the removal of the right eyes of the victims involved. The two had notable conditions that would ultimately prompt them into the respective behavior that they performed during the Cyclops Killings. Saito was born with a brain dysfunction: due to damage to his posterior pituitary gland, his brain was unable to secrete oxytocin, making him unable to feel love or empathy normally. His brain also had another idiosyncrasy: it would release a flood of dopamine and endorphins whenever Saito killed something. During his younger years, Saito would kill small animals such as cats and birds to cope with his chemical imbalance, but as time passed he grew a tolerance to the experience.

On the other hand, Rohan Kumakura was a rising member of the Ujisaki family, and during his times as a Yakuza member, a member of a rival gang gave him a beating on the left side of his head with a metal bat. This caused Rohan to develop hemispatial neglect on the right side of his vision: while he can technically see things on the right side, his brain does not register anything he sees on the right side of his vision field. This was further compounded by the left side of his brain being his inferior hemisphere, built for vision and spatial recognition. Because of this, he would only eat from the left side of his plates, and he only draws from the left side of a scene when he draws. Notably, he could only see the right side of a person's face, and as such, only the right eyes. Due to his inability to perceive things from his own right eye, combined with the fact that he could only see other peoples' right eyes, he developed a fascination for right eyes, especially those of dead women.

Precursor Murder – 2001[]

During 2001, Saito Sejima's father, congressman So Sejima, had entered a secret relationship with Eitoku High graduate Manaka Iwai. Manaka eventually gave birth to So's illegitimate daughter, and shortly afterwards, So would meet up with Manaka to discuss how to handle the situation at the Harbor Warehouse District. Saito, having grown a tolerance to killing animals, decided he wanted to advance towards killing a human and experience the flood of dopamine and endorphins he would feel upon taking a human life. He chose Manaka as his target, as he held envy towards her for the fact that So gave all of his love and attention to her, while So held little love for Saito himself. Saito tailed So via taxi to the Warehouse District, and waited in hiding for Manaka to leave. As Manaka walked out to leave the scene, Saito charged at her from behind and violently stabbed her to death, killing her. This caused Saito to experience the feeling of pleasure from killing a human via his brain for the first time, and Saito would eventually become addicted to the pleasant feeling he felt from killing Manaka.

Meanwhile, So, out of fear that this murder would ruin his political career, contacted Rohan and asked him to dispose of Manaka's body. Rohan arrived with some of his men and carried Manaka's body to the mountains to bury it. Just before they covered her lifeless body, however, Rohan, having become fascinated with the right eyes of dead women, ripped out Manaka's right eye. He became enamored with Manaka's eyeball, and his fascination with the right eyes of dead women increased as he desired to collect even more eyeballs like Manaka's.

The 4 Cyclops Murders – 2013[]

Twelve years had passed since the death of Manaka Iwai. Saito, desiring to re-experience the feeling of pleasure he felt from killing Manaka, and Rohan, who desired to collect more right eyeballs of dead women like Manaka's, eventually struck a mutually beneficial deal. They agreed to perform a series of murders where Saito would brutally murder various women, while Rohan would rip out their right eyes after their death. The deal benefitted both of them as it would appease both of their unusual pleasures. Four different women were killed over the course of May and September 2013, and their bodies were buried in the mountains. After missing reports for the victims went around, their bodies were eventually discovered in October 2013, all with their right eyes removed. Rohan eventually wrote a letter to the media under the alias "Cyclops", confessing to having killed all four of the women who were found. This led to the case being known as the Cyclops Serial Killings.

Parasitism and Arrest[]

Incident at the Sagan Residence[]

Around the same time that the Cyclops Serial Killings happened, Rohan had captured police detective Hayato Yagyu, and goaded him into being an assassin on the Kumakura family's behalf, under the codename Falco. Towards the end of the year, Yagyu had entered a relationship with Hitomi Sagan, and wished to come clean for her and her daughter, Iris Sagan. Yagyu told Rohan that he wanted to leave the organization and put his time as Falco behind, and Rohan agreed, but gave him one final mission before he was to leave: to kill Hitomi and Iris, due to their relation to Manaka Iwai. Yagyu, wanting to find a way to protect the two while still leaving the organization, reached out to his old friend, Shizue Kuranushi, for help. Kuranushi had recently been assigned as the commander of the new special unit, the Advanced Brain Investigation Squad, and revealed to Yagyu the existence of the Psync machine. She told Yagyu that while the Psync machine was normally used to look into the minds of suspects and persons of interest in a case, it could also be used to swap bodies between two people. With this in mind, the two came up with a plan to have Yagyu and Rohan switch bodies, and to have Yagyu in Rohan's body announce to the Kumakura gang that Hitomi and Iris are not to be approached under any circumstances, while Rohan would be arrested for the crimes of the anonymous assassin Falco.

The body swap was ultimately successful, a police officer who was unaware of the swap unknowingly allowed Rohan in Yagyu's body to escape. Realizing the situation, Yagyu and Kuranushi immediately rushed to the Sagan residence to protect Hitomi and Iris. Rohan attempted to kill Hitomi and Iris at their home, the Sagan residence, but Kuranushi and Yagyu arrived in time to stop him. However, Yagyu, attempting to shoot down Rohan, unintentionally fired at Hitomi's shoulder, causing nerve damage. This would cause Yagyu great grief and regret over what happened.

Kidnapping of Hayato Yagyu[]

After the incident at the Sagan residence, Yagyu, still in Rohan's body, was asked to interrogate Saito Sejima. During the Psync intended to have Yagyu and Rohan swap bodies, both Yagyu and Kuranushi learned the truth about the Cyclops Serial Killings, learning that they were a collaborative effort between Rohan and Saito. Yagyu, as a detective of the Homicide Division of the Metropolitan Police Department, had been investigating the case prior, and saw this as a means to solve the case. He approached the Sejima Residence on Kuranushi's request and proceeded to interrogate Saito, with the hopes of using Rohan's body to trick Saito into lowering his guard so he could be peacefully taken into police custody and arrested for his crimes. However, Saito quickly realized he was not talking to the real Rohan. He ordered So's bodyguards to capture Yagyu, and they took him to the Kabasaki Chemical Plant, where he was tortured and drugged with truth serum to force him to confess the truth. Through this, Saito learned about the Psync machine and how it could be used to swap bodies.

Saito ordered So's bodyguards to steal the Prototype Psync machine, and have it brought to the Chemical Plant. Having become fascinated by the prospect of switching bodies, Saito proceeded to use the Psync machine, pulling out his own left eye as well as Rohan's. He had hoped to switch bodies and then kill Yagyu while he was in Saito's body. However, the Psync failed, causing both of them to successfully switch bodies, but also not transferring their memories with it. As such, both woke up in opposite bodies but with no memories of what happened. Yagyu awoke in Saito's body, and having been given a stimulant from the machine, immediately fled the Chemical Plant. Meanwhile, Saito found himself in Rohan's body, but said body was given a sedative by the machine, causing him to remain asleep for an extended period of time while he only awoke once everyone else had left.

Arrest, Trials, and Hospitalization[]

Rohan, in Yagyu's original body, was sentenced to trial for the countless extrajudicial assassinations that he had performed under the assassin codename Falco. He was sent to trial for Falco's crimes and was ultimately given a life sentence in prison. As a prisoner, he would be known as Inmate #89.

Meanwhile, the police decided to attempt to send Rohan Kumakura to trial for attempted murder of Hitomi Sagan. As Saito was the one who was in Rohan's body at the time, he was the one who would ultimately face punishment. While prosecution attempted to sentence "Rohan" on premeditated murder, due to Saito having lost his memories from the Psync body swap malfunctioning, the latter was unable to act rationally and showed no recollection of anything. Ultimately, the court declared that "Rohan" was insane at the time of the incident, effectively granting him insanity defense from the charges. Saito, in Rohan's body, was ultimately sent to a special mental hospital where he would be kept confined and monitored over.

Return of the Killers[]

Several years later, in 2018, Saito Sejima regained all his memories and left the special hospital he was housed in. Inside Rohan's body, he begins to enact his plan to reclaim his original body.

Trivia[]

  • The term Cyclops Serial Killings was one of the keywords featured on the official website (prior to the redesign) for AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES. This was in allusion to either the original serial killings or the new serial killings.
    • In the announcement trailer for the game, the term "Serial Killer Cyclops" is associated with the same Japanese phrase used for Cyclops Serial Killings, サイクロプス連続殺人. This may mean that one of these two versions is a mistranslation of the term. However, considering "Serial Killings" has been officially used in media for this series, that means "Serial Killer" is the one mistranslated, assuming the terms are not interchangeable in Japanese.
  • In the Famitsu Interview, the developers explained that the last victim of the Original Cyclops Killings, the one who wears yellow clothes and sunglasses, was originally a beta design for Boss. Once Boss's design was finalized, they gave the design to the final victim, in order to model her in "PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN."[1]
