PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 1 is a dreamworld featured in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES.

It is a Somnium created from Iris Sagan's dream by the Psync Machine. Kaname Date investigated this Somnium to verify the truth of Iris's theories about Naixatloz.

Objects of Interest[]

The Somnium is made up of one big area, labeled as Golden Yokocho in-game, but as it's constructed in a ShovelForge style. However, a second location is also accessible in the path towards Branch B, labeled as ???, which is simply Golden Yokocho in a realistic form as the world stands corrupted.

ShovelForge Golden Yokocho actually has 3 main areas: the Northern Section, the Middle Section, and the Southern Section. The Somnium begins in the Northern Section, then takes the player to the Southern Section. After that, the gate separating the Southern and Middle Sections are opened, combining the two together. Finally, the player is taken back to the Northern Section for the end of the Somnium.

There are several Steps that are necessary to clear the Somnium. With each step, a new item or change is applied, and with these additions, the choices you can take on objects change. They are as follows:

  • Lvl. 1 Pickaxe
  • Gold Ingots*
  • Disco Ball Materials*
  • Lvl. 5 Pickaxe*
  • Stone Ingots*
  • For Branch A:
    • Stone Monument
    • Bloomed Irises
    • Love Bomb
    • Love Crater*
    • UFO Destroyed*
  • For Branch B:
    • THIS MAN Material (PSN/SW/Steam) or GRAY Material (Game Pass)
    • Lvl. 255 Pickaxe
    • Wall Broken
    • Mirror Destroyed

While the B Route contains less objects to create, in a sense, it actually requires the extra step of traveling to ??? and back again. At Gold Ingots, Mental Lock #1 is cleared. At Lvl. 5 Pickaxe, Mental Lock #2 is cleared. At both UFO Destroyed and Mirror Destroyed, Mental Lock #3 is cleared. And with that, the final Mental Lock is available easily at the end. Clearing each Step resets the TIMIE available for each Monitor throughout the Somnium, of which you can only obtain one TIMIE from all of them per Step.

Additionally, Date and Aiba interact with two versions of Iris Sagan as they appear within the monitors throughout the Somnium. For simplicity, the version of her that is live-streaming ShovelForge is referred to as "A-set" while the version of her that is in danger of NAIXATLOZ is referred to as "Iris."

Golden Yokocho[]

Golden Yokocho, in the form of a ShovelForge map. Divided into a Northern, Southern, and Middle Sections, the entire street is made up of blocks and shapes from ShovelForge. Crafting objects and causing environmental changes are necessary to progress.

All of the TIMIE found within the Somnium is by default labeled as [?], obstructing what piece the player can obtain. However, at the Crafting Table A, choosing "Make Something Else" will change all the TIMIE in the Somnium to reveal what their hidden TIMIE pieces are, making it easier to avoid Negative TIMIE and favor Positive ones.

Northern Section (With Lvl. 1 Pickaxe) Dig 10s
Detail:
As A-set states one of her catchphrases, "Let's hit it!" Aiba engages in breaking the silver gate.
Fail:
Aiba states she can't dig, then Date asks her where her fighting spirit is.
Win:
With Aiba clearing the gate, A-set collects a rare material from the drop. Date states this seems to be fun, while Aiba complains that digging is tiring. With the gate open, the two proceed forward. They eventually reach a brand new area, unable to return to the first area. While A-set asks where else to dig, Aiba begins to wonder if she has to dig everywhere.

Fail:
Aiba states that she can't dig it up, but Date encourages her, stating that she can do anything she sets her mind to, and saying to go again.
Win:
Aiba spins as she destroys the gate, while A-set gains a new material. They move on to the next area, the Middle Section, where they note it's a rather spacious location. Date notices a place that looks like Marble, while Aiba finds wilted winter irises on the ground. A-set wonders how they're gonna check everything around this area, and if they can make an item with their current materials. As the pair note the new crafting table, Iris tells Date about the shrine by the flowers, saying that they need to place a stone monument at the pedestal, and that they should have the materials needed to make it, finishing off that he's the only one who can save her.

If "Make Disco Ball" was selected:

Detail:
As Date remains infatuated, Aiba tells him that following Iris's plan is not a good idea, while he responds that they must continue as they get closer to the truth.

If "Make Something Else" was selected:

Detail:
As Date remains infatuated, Aiba realizes that Iris's demands are dangerous. When Date tries to argue with her, she tells him to think rationally about the situation.

Pick Up 10s
Detail:
As Aiba picks it up, Date notes that it looks rather avant-garde, while Aiba wonders if it was built with glowsticks in mind. While A-set states that they should dig up the silver gate, Aiba begins imitating the motion of Digging, which she finds fun to do while Date reminds her of their work. Suddenly, Iris appears and tells Date that the pickaxe was dropped by a person attacked by NAIXATLOZ, and suggests to be careful in case they attack him too, which Aiba finds concerning. They wonder which of the two they should listen, the let's player A-set or the captured Iris, as they look at the gate (which Date thinks looks like tofu) as a possible avenue to dig forward.
This action gives you a Lvl. 1 Pickaxe.
Vending Machine A vending machine resting next to the house with the crafting table. Date believes the vending machine is a stick of imitation crab.
Southern Section Investigate 10s 1/#

x#

Detail:
After investigating the vending machine, Aiba makes the declaration that it is, in fact, NOT imitation crab. Date begins to wonder why the game is called ShovelForge, and Aiba suggests that maybe it's due to an interest in crafting digging utensils. Date realizes what a strange world it is.
Dig 10s
Detail:
With Date declaring "Happy digging," Aiba begins digging on the vending machine.
Fail:
After failing, Aiba wishes it were an imitation crab, in hopes it wouldn't be as hard. Date tells her to imagine that it's a snow crab instead.
Win:
With the vending machine successfully broken, several colored eggs fall off, which A-set notes it's a lot of materials for a drop. After A-set asks everyone to like, subscribe, and redo-wit, Date asks Aiba if they're in Golden Yokocho, recognizing the layout of the area. Remembering this is where they were attacked by mercenaries, a giant blue eyeball named an Elite appears. A-set states that they should beat the Elite with no problem, while Iris interjects and tells Date that Project Blue Beam is beginning, in which they will kill Iris. Date asks what they can do, and Iris responds with dancing, the most beautiful art form humanity has created, as that's the only way to defeat the rich and powerful NAIXATLOZ and the Wadjet System. A-set reappears, stating they can make a disco ball with the new materials, and that it's dancing time. Date asks Aiba what she thinks, and while at first she simply states "ShovelForge is not a dancing game," she later states that NAIX is not real. Date says that Iris isn't trying to mislead him, but Aiba states that this shouldn't change any facts. They look for a place to craft the disco ball.
Clearing the QTE gives you Disco Ball Materials.
Crafting Table A A crafting table, located in one of the southernmost houses. Date and Aiba can use the table to craft new items with the right materials. With enough materials, A-set states that she found a crafting table, but Aiba notes that they can use the materials to make something other than a disco ball. Date tells her that they need to make a disco ball, since that's what the viewers expect, but Aiba begins to wonder.

Make Something Else 30s
Detail:
Aiba asks Date about the disco ball they were supposed to be making, to which he responds by saying something was bugging him. Aiba makes a switch in an instant, which makes Date wonder if the table is necessary. With the switch, Aiba places it in a house outside, and once she flips it, a projector atop the house turns off, making the Elite disappear. When Aiba presents this to Date, he begins to question Iris's words. Iris appears and tells him that Project Blue Beam is trying to trick him with holograms, and that he must use the power of dance. Meanwhile, A-set is curious as to why the enemies disappeared. Gate 2, up north, begins morphing into a pile of debris, while the pickaxe morphs from Level 1 to Level 5, and A-set begins to wonder if this is some sort of glitch in the game, while Iris asks once more to believe in her.
This action gives you a Lvl. 5 Pickaxe, and unlocks Mental Lock #2.

This action also reveals all of the hidden TIMIEs to the player from this point onward.

Make Disco Ball 30s
Detail:
Date tells Aiba to make a disco ball, and she promptly makes one, which Date finds anti-climactic. Outside, A-set states that it's time to dance for real, and Aiba starts to wonder what she will do. Iris appears and tells Date to use the Power of Dance to fight against NAIX, and he relays the order to a panicking Aiba. Aiba begins dancing to "Invincible Rainbow Arrow," and during the song, the multicolored egg blocks appear around her. The Elite attacks Aiba, but she floats around a pink block, dodging all its laser attacks. At the end of the song, all the blocks surround Aiba in the air, as they project a power beam right at the Elite, defeating it as it explodes on Gate 2. A-set celebrates, while Iris states that they foiled Project Blue Beam, meaning they can fight against NAIX. Date enjoys as Iris praises him and states she feels safe with him. A-set notices that a Level 5 Pickaxe was dropped on the floor, and states they can proceed forward, while Iris tells Date to defeat NAIX. Date states it's time to go, which she responds by saying that they don't need a hot head in this situation.
This action gives you a Lvl. 5 Pickaxe, and unlocks Mental Lock #2.

Craft n/a 60s
Detail:
While Date asks what "n/a" is, Aiba tells him that he can use this glitch, which Date mistakes as "Gretsch" and states he doesn't know anything about guitars. Aiba elaborates that this game has bugs and errors that can be used to reveal things they weren't meant to see. As they make n/a, Aiba realizes she's spending the THIS MAN/GRAY material, and once Date asks if they gained a glitched skill, Aiba realizes that the "numbers" have changed. Date asks if the "numbers" means that the date has changed to August 32nd, but instead Aiba reveals they have a pickaxe at level 255. With this level value, they may be able to destroy something that they weren't supposed to, something Iris doesn't want them to touch.
This action gives you a Lvl. 255 Pickaxe.
Middle Section Craft Monument 60s
Detail:
As Aiba wonders if they truly have all the materials needed, Date points to the material next to the table: a black egg block that came out of the vending machine. A-set notices the egg, and Iris tells Date to use it to build the monument. Aiba makes the monument with the materials, and places it on her head. Date tells her she could've given it more "umph," which she responds by saying she doesn't have the specifications for "umph." Iris tells him to place the monument at the pedestal to make miracles, which he agrees. Aiba asks if he's going to continue doing as Iris tells him to, and he declares that he wants to believe in her.
This action gives you the Stone Monument.

Aiba places the monument on the pedestal, and suddenly the wilted irises inside begin to blossom. A beam of light shoots from the monument out the door, and Date asks Aiba to check on the wilted flowers outside. When they note the heart arrangement of winter irises on the floor, Date, Aiba, and A-set stare in awe at the miracle. Iris appears and reminds Date of the meaning of the flowers, saying that him believing in her is "good news" and that Date himself is her "hope." Iris tells him that Date can use "it" now, and A-set notes that there could be a rare drop at the center of the flowers. Aiba notes that they can dig there.
This action Blooms the Irises.

Dig 10s
Detail:
As Aiba realizes she can use the pickaxe, Date tells her to begin.
Fail:
Failing to break the wall, Date states its not working. Despite this, Aiba declares she'll try one more time.
Win:
With the wall destroyed, Aiba passes through into the backside of the shrine, where they find some winter irises in bloom. Date wonders if it's a miracle, but Aiba assures him it's part of the programming changing them from wilted to bloom. Iris calls out to Date, trying to stop him from venturing any further and reminding him of the monument and NAIX. Aiba declares that they have the strongest pickaxe, and heads in through a strange gap in the wall. As Iris calls out to Date, Aiba walks along a hidden path outside of bounds from the ShovelForge world. A-set's screen goes black, and wondering if it's loading, tells her viewers to head to the bathroom while they wait.
Clearing the QTE Breaks the Wall and takes you to ???, Iris's real Somnium.

Use Love Bomb 60s
Detail:
As Aiba places the Love Bomb down, A-set declares to dance, and when Aiba asks Date if she should dance, he responds with "Please!" With that, Aiba begins dancing to "Invincible Rainbow Arrow" again on the bomb, and suddenly the winter irises float up to Aiba, circling around her as they form a heart. The Love Bomb explodes, leaving a giant heart-shaped crater on the floor leading to lava, which A-set resounds to dying and respawning. Aiba falls into the lava and dies, and then respawns at the home bed, back in the Northern Section, where she complains at the idea of dying over and over again as a video game character. Date states he's further away from Iris than before, while Aiba tries to discourage him. Iris appears again, and when Dare asks if he did something wrong, she reassures him she didn't. Outside the house, the winter irises clear the adjacent houses, revealing Iris standing in the clearing, before a giant pyramid covers her. Suddenly, a giant UFO appears over the pyramid, and the monitors are taken over by Mercenaries. A-set is excited to fight a final boss, while Iris cries out for help as NAIX approaches, which causes A-set's PC to start acting up. Date heads off to save Iris, but as Aiba tries to discourage him as this is a Somnium, he reminds her that he once saved Iris in a previous Somnium, meaning the real-world Iris is in danger. Aiba states that they need to find something to fight against the UFO.

On the corpse of the zombie, the face of THIS MAN appears, surprising Aiba. When Date asks, Aiba tells him about the urban legend of THIS MAN, who appears in the dreams of many unrelated people, offering to go into more detail later. Date rejects her offer, and suddenly Aiba realizes that THIS MAN is a material.

Win:
With a successful dig, a strange cube appears before them. A-set wonders what it is, and searches the ShovelForge Wiki as to what it is. She then states that the object is a Love Bomb, which Aiba says it's not a real object in the game. Iris tells Date he must use the Love Bomb to find her, using dance to activate it. With that, Aiba begins dancing to "Invincible Rainbow Arrow" again, wherein the winter irises begin surrounding the UFO, and causes the mercenaries to begin dancing on the monitor. The mercenaries pop out of the monitor, and they act as background dancers as Aiba dances on the pyramid. Winter irises rest atop the UFO, which sucks in the mercenaries and then the pyramid itself, before exploding in the sky. Detail:
A-set states that it's time to create a disco ball on the crafting table. When Date asks where, Aiba points to the crafting table inside the house. Date realizes that it's not a block of congealed oil, to which Aiba asks why anyone would place blocks of hardened fat as furniture in a house. When Date brings up Hansel and Gretel, Aiba tells him they're not real either.
With Lvl. 5 Pickaxe:

??? (Iris's Real Somnium)[]

The world named ??? is a realistic interpretation of Golden Yokocho, in contrast to the ShovelForge version above. However, the land is corrupted and distorted in color. There is only one choice available throughout the entire map, although the Hidden Object is hidden here as well.

Object Description
Availability Action Cost TIMIE Effect
Gate The entrance to Golden Yokocho, lying at the very end of a long, corrupted road. Despite technically being an entrance, it functions as an exit from ???.
Enter 10s
Detail:
Aiba enters through the gate, and appears back within ShovelForge's Golden Yokocho. As they reach it, the houses in front of them glitch out and transforms into a pyramid, with a UFO on top. The screen morphs to show mercenaries on-screen, and Iris appears to tell Date that NAIX is close and that she needs help. Aiba decides to help Iris, by breaking her world of delusions and revealing the truth.

Hidden Object[]

  • The Hidden Object is located in ???, the real-world version of Golden Yokocho that can be reached while attempting to reach Branch B of the Somnium. To reach it, arrive at ??? and make your way down the street. About halfway through, just past the car, you should see a wooden shrine on the right side, where the hidden object is placed upon the pedestal.

Trivia[]

  • ShovelForge is an in-game parody of the real life video game Minecraft.[1] As such, there are several references to the game in this Somnium:
    • The overall aesthetic of ShovelForge is reminiscent of Minecraft's blocky appearance. In particular, Aiba's appearance as a blocky avatar with rectangular limbs and a square head is reminiscent of the playable character of Minecraft.
    • Aiba uses a pickaxe in order to break and "dig" objects throughout the Somnium, which functions like mining minerals in Minecraft. Even the need to button-mash the action command is reminiscent of mining.
    • The ingots that Aiba collects while "digging" blocks are similar to the ingots that the player obtains from smelting ore, used in crafting equipment, weapons, and items.
    • Crafting tables are located throughout the level in order to allow Aiba to craft objects using obtained materials, much like how Minecraft operates on a crafting system that mostly relies on a special crafting table to combine materials together.
    • Selecting Talk on ??? reveals that the figure inside Marble is a zombie-like monster, which Aiba attacks with her pickaxe in order to defeat it. The zombie is reminiscent of the zombie enemies in Minecraft, the most common enemy mobs in the game.
    • Selecting Use Love Bombon the Debris will ultimately result in Aiba falling into a pit of lava and respawning on a yellow bed. This is similar to how death and respawn functions in Minecraft, wherein if a player dies they can respawn at the last bed they slept in.
    • Ironically enough, Aiba states that ShovelForge does not contain any shovels, despite Minecraft containing shovels in its own game.
  • The A-set shown on the monitors is framed and presented in the same style as popular online Let's Players and Streamers. In particular, A-set is placed at a corner of the screen in front of what is seemingly a green screen in order to make a transparent background, and as she faces her own monitor, her portrait is facing into the frame, in the direction of the gameplay on screen. After winning the QTE on the Vending Machine, A-set tells her audience to "like, subscribe, and re-towit," a common expression used by Let's Players on YouTube to encourage the audience to interact with their content and follow along in future uploads.
  • When selecting Dig on the Vending Machine, after winning the QTE, a giant eyeball named an "Elite" appears, and Iris warns Date about "Project Blue Beam" coming to kill her. "Project Blue Beam" is the name of a conspiracy theory, in which it is believed that NASA is attempting to implement an Antichrist-based religion as the New World Order, which is similar to NAIXATLOZ affection towards space and demonic figures.[2]
  • When selecting Craft n/a on Crafting Table B, Aiba notes that the creation of "n/a" has changed the "numbers" in the coding, to which Date asks if the numbers changing means the date is August 32nd. This could be a potential reference to the movie August 32nd on Earth (French: Un 32 août sur terre), a Canadian film from 1998.[3]
  • In the original version of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES released on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 1 and PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 2 both contain appearances of THIS MAN through your actions in the Somnium. THIS MAN is based on a marketing stunt created in which multiple people allegedly witnessed the face of the same man in their dreams.[4] The dialogue for discovering THIS MAN in MaiN: 2 changes depending on whether you found him in MaiN: 1 or not. Finding him in both instances gives you the achievement "The Dream Wanderer."
    • THIS MAN also appears in the Somnium PSYNCIN' IN THE CAPTaiN as an image on one of the bottles in the kitchen top. There's no player input that can have the characters notice THIS MAN, and this appearance of him doesn't contribute to getting the achievement.
      Psyncin_in_the_Main_request_1

Psyncin in the Main request 1

Video footage of "Gray" from the Game Pass release.

    • In the Game Pass version of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES, released for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass on PC, appearances of THIS MAN is removed from both Somnia. Instead, he is replaced with "Gray", a strange alien face. All lines referencing THIS MAN were removed, and the achievement obtained for Gray is renamed "The Dream Invader" instead.
  • Selecting Observe on ??? will have Date state that the figure is "Futoshi" and mentions another person named Ikuno. This is potentially a reference to the 2018 animated series DARLING in the FRANXX, which includes a pair of side characters named Futoshi and Ikuno, which are paired together as pilots by the end of the series.[5] It's unclear at the moment what the reference to "Sri Lanka" Aiba mentions is about.
  • When selecting Dig on the Soft Ground, a Love Bomb appears from the ground.
    • A-set states that she's going to look up what the item is on "the wiki" for ShovelForge, which is a reference to fanmade wiki sites dedicated to specific games and franchises, such as our very own wiki right here. A-set comes back and states that the item is a Love Bomb, while Aiba states that "Love Bombs" don't exist in ShovelForge, suggesting that Aiba searched for this information online herself, most likely using the real-world ShovelForge wiki to find her information.
    • A continuity error exists for the player if they choose this specific option after selecting Craft Something Else back on Crafting Table A. When Iris states that the Love Bomb is activated by dancing, Aiba will complain, stating "Haven't I danced enough already?" This line of dialogue remains consistent even if the player chooses to not craft the Disco Ball earlier, therefore not making Aiba dance.
  • After selecting Use Love Bombon the Debris, dying in the lava, and respawning in the Northern Section, Aiba briefly breaks the fourth-wall by claiming it's tiring dying and respawning as a video-game character.
