Story

PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 1 is a dreamworld featured in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES.

It is the tenth chapter and the fourth Somnium of Branch B (Iris Route and Resolution Route). It is a Somnium created from Iris Sagan's dream by the Psync Machine. Kaname Date investigated this Somnium to verify the truth of Iris's theories about NAIXATLOZ.

History[]

Aiba and Date found themselves in a world made of blocks after entering the Somnium of Iris. Aiba told Date that this is the world of ShovelForge - a sandbox game in which you make and move cubes to create structures on a map. Her full resolution image here could not be loaded, so Aiba changed her appearance to match the style here.

You dug.[]

Then, the two noticed that Iris's livestream of playing ShovelForge began to appear on a nearby screen. Just after Iris introduced herself, the screen suddenly switched to what appeared to be an imprisoned Iris. She called to Date for help, saying that Naix was coming here, and Date should find her first, and then the screen changed back to the game livestream.

Iris mentions picking up a Pickaxe for digging. Aiba complied, picking up a nearby pickaxe and digging towards the blocked gate ahead, opening an entrance.

You made it.[]

After entering the next accessible area, Aiba continued the digging activity and digged what appeared to be a vending machine block, obtaining a large amount of materials. After that, Date realized that this was actually Golden Yokocho, where he and Iris were attacked before. Aiba found that the display on the screen changed again: the imprisoned Iris told Date that Naix was trying to use Project Blue Beam to kill her, and then asked Date to make a disco ball and dance against them, which was the only way against Naix and the Wadjet System. At the same time, a giant blue eye appeared in the sky, dubbed "an elite." Aiba reminded Date that Naix was a non-existent thing, But the two insisted on moving on. Aiba came to the crafting table in the house nearby, made an item with the obtained materials, and forced the Elite back.

Branch A: Defeated Naix.[]

After confirming that there were no other enemies, Aiba continued to move forward, and digged another blocked gate to enter the next area. A shrine was located here, as well as what looked like the house of Marble, and some wilted iris flowers scattered on the ground. At this time, the screen changed again, and the imprisoned Iris asked Date to make a stone monument and put it on the pedestal in the shrine - this shrine was the last hope of humanity against Naix, and Date the only one available to save the world. Seeing this, Aiba once again reminded Date to maintain a rational judgment.

Aiba directly found the crafting table and made a monument according to Iris's request. Although Aiba still doubted whether Iris's these demands should be met, she then had to agree with Date. Aiba then entered the shrine to place the monument, then it emitted a ray of light that made the wilted iris outside the shrine blossomed, and a piece of soft ground appeared at the center of bloomed iris. Aiba began to dig the soft ground and found an item called Love Crate. Iris in the livestream confirmed the item's information from the wiki, but Aiba claimed that she did not know the relevant data from the game.

Next, Date asked Aiba to go to the debris to place the Love Crate and dance according to Iris's instructions. Although Aiba still wanted to say no, she performed it. As Aiba danced, the Love Crate emitted light and destroyed the debris, but also blew up the entire ground, causing Aiba to fall into lava and respawn from a bed in a small room, back where she came from in the first place.

There, Aiba and Date found Iris, but she was soon wrapped in a pyramid, and a UFO reappeared. The imprisoned Iris told Date that Naix was coming here soon, and Iris in the livestream regarded the UFO as the final boss. Date is anxious to find a way to rescue Iris, and chooses to let Aiba dance to a mirror door again. The song of Invincible Rainbow Arrow once again began, during Aiba's dancing, The mercenaries shown on the screen also began to imitate Aiba's dance, dropped out of the screen and appeared under the UFO. Then, the UFO was filled with the bloomed iris, absorbing the pyramid and mercenaries with a beam.

Branch A: You believed Iris.[]

With the Pyramid gone, Iris and her Core appeared. Aiba touched Iris's core as requested by Iris and Date.

Branch B: Defeated Naix.[]

After confirming that there were no other enemies, Aiba continued to move forward, and digged another blocked gate to enter the next area. A shrine was located here, as well as what looked like the house of Marble, and some wilted iris flowers scattered on the ground. At this time, the screen changed again, and the imprisoned Iris asked Date to make a stone monument and put it on the pedestal in the shrine - this shrine was the last hope of humanity against Naix, and Date the only one available to save the world. Seeing this, Aiba once again reminded Date to maintain a rational judgment.

Aiba came to the Marble-like house, eliminated a zombie-like monster inside, and obtained a strange material. She then went to the crafting table, made an "n/a" and told Date that she could use the glitch, claiming that "this game is filled with bugs and programming errors, and they can use this to reveal things that shouldn't supposed to be seen." During the production process, the mysterious material obtained just now was consumed, and Aiba found that her Pickaxe had been upgraded to the highest level, Lvl. 255, which meant that she was able to destroy objects that should not be destroyed, including those which Iris did not want to be destroyed.

With the help of the upgraded pickaxe, Aiba forcibly destroyed the wall inside the shrine, creating a path that shouldn't exist. Aiba walked in and found some bloomed iris, thought they were the product of game's glitched programming, and tried to walk into a weird portal. The imprisoned Iris called out what to do with the monument and Naix, and Aiba replied that with the Lvl. 255 Pickaxe, these were no longer worth mentioning. Then, Aiba travelled through the portal, left the world of ShovelForge via a strange passage, and entered the Somnium world transformed from real-world-like Golden Yokocho. Then, Aiba walked across the street to the end and returned to the world of ShovelForge.

After returning to the world of ShovelForge, Aiba found and destroyed a mirror door. Iris cried that it was used to increase the power of dance, but Aiba insisted on destroying it. After destroying the mirror door, Aiba and Date saw through it and found a picture of Iris as a child, accompanied by Hitomi, visiting an exhibition with a UFO model. Date began to insist on idea of destroying Iris's delusional world.

Branch B: You didn't believe Iris.[]

With the Pyramid gone, Iris and her Core appeared. Aiba and Date insisted on destroying it, despite Iris's pleas. After the core was destroyed, the nearby mirror door opened, revealing the scene of 12-year-old Iris reading an occult book.

Trivia[]

  • During Mental Lock #2, performing Make Disco Ball or Make Something Else on the Crafting Table A both unlocks the Mental Lock, but the events after that are completely different:
    • If Make Disco Ball is chosen, Aiba made a Disco Ball according to Iris's request, and then danced to Invincible Rainbow Arrow. Then, the object known as Project Blue Beam destroyed.
    • If Make Something Else is chosen, Aiba and Date ignore Iris's instructions and make a Lever, and Aiba let Date wait for her operation. She put the lever on the wall and pulled it off, the Elite disappeared immediately. The imprisoned Iris hurriedly explained to Date that do not to be deceived by the hologram of the Project Blue Beam, but the livestreaming Iris thought it was a bug occurred in the game.

Name[]

  • The name "PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN" refers to Iris Sagan's status as the "main heroine" of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES, and, depending on perspective, the main character of the game itself.
    • Another possible interpretation is that the vowel pair in "MaiN" is meant to be pronounced just like the title of the game, AI (/ī/). This means that, rather than being pronounced as "main" (/mān/), the word is pronounced as "mine" (/mīn/). This is possibly a connection to the video game Minecraft, which is the real-world version of ShovelForge.
    • The "1" in the title denotes that it's the first version of the title, followed by PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 2, as Iris is Psynced twice in a row and retains certain elements across both versions of the Somnia.
  • The name of the Somnium's achievement, "MaiN1: Antinomic Conflict", indicates that the fantasy of Iris being associated with Naixatloz in this Somnium world is a serious departure from reality. This can also be understood as, in this Somnium, Date is faced with believing Iris's delusional words and adhering to Aiba's advice to maintain rational thinking.
