-Save Iris!-
"To save her, you'll need to give her the fruit of immortality."
—Somnium description

PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 2 is a dreamworld featured in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES.

It is a Somnium world created from Iris Sagan's dream by the Prototype Psync Machine. Kaname Date entered her Somnium in an attempt to save her life.

Mental Locks[]

This Somnium is divided into two parts in total, the first two Mental Locks are located in the Ikume Shrine of the ShovelForge theme, and the latter two are located in the Real Ikume Shrine. All TIMIEs available throughout Somnium are random, from Pool MaiN:2. When the total remaining time is greater than or equal to 3 minutes, there is a 6.67% probability that a negative TIMIE x2 will be given, but the TIMIE types that appear with a 93.33% probability are all types that will bring great help to the player. Types that frequently appear during early progress are [10] or [20].

Mental Lock #1 - Do something about the beam of light.[]

MaiN 2 Mental Lock 1

After entering this Somnium, the player appears in the ShovelForge themed Ikume Shrine. The objects that can be investigated at this time are: Iris, Egg-shaped Monument, Chozuya, Iris Unguicularis, Arch, Pedestal A, B, C. A beam of light emerges from the core above Iris and passes through a pedestal. The player must try to place a monument on the base to make it refract - Select Place on Pedestal on Egg-shaped Monument to do so.

After doing this, the player will carry this Egg-shaped Monument. To complete the pentagram, the player needs to investigate the Chozuya, the area through which the refracted light passes. Before coming to Chozuya, execute Stick your hand in it.

Random TIMIEs obtained during this period may be negative. If x2 TIMIE is obtained, it is necessary to investigate closer objects and execute the option that originally consumed 10s.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #1:

  • Place on Pedestal on Egg-shaped Monument (30s, Random) -> Stick your hand in it on Chozuya (30s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random)

Mental Lock #2 - Complete the pentagram once more.[]

MaiN 2 Mental Lock 2

After trying to complete the pentagram for the first time, the props in the scene will be reset, and the player must reset the refraction point based on the newly given base to create the pentagram. Chozuya and Iris Unguicularis are destroyed,

A large number of Pedestals appear everywhere on the map. Except for Pedestal (Yellow), there are five Pedestals in Blue and Peach colors, marked as A, B, C, D, and E. In addition, there are two reappeared Egg-shaped Monuments, one in Blue and one in Yellow; and two Guardian Dogs, one in Blue and one in Peach. Here, the player need to observe which Pedestals should be interacted with and place the Egg-shaped Monument on them, preferably by having them on the minimap to confirm this.

The player can take Monuments from Pedestals that already have them, or investigate empty Pedestals and place Monuments on Pedestals while holding a monument. The correct five bases are: Pedestal (Blue) A, Pedestal (Blue) C, Pedestal (Peach) A, Pedestal (Peach) C, Pedestal (Yellow). When a total of five Pedestals on the map are placed by Monuments, the core above Iris will start emitting beam in an attempt to form a pentagram. If any of the refraction points is wrong, all placed Monuments will be fully restored to their original positions.

To complete the pentagram, place the Blue Monument on the Pedestal (Blue) C, the Yellow Monument on the Pedestal (Yellow), take Peach Pedestal off from Pedestal (Peach) B and place it on Pedestal (Peach) A, and Mental Lock #2 will be unlocked.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #2 (viable to arrange in any order with three option sequences below):

  • Pick Up on Egg-shaped Monument (Blue) (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random) -> Place Monument on Pedestal (Blue) C (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random)
  • Take Monument on Pedestal (Peach) B (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random) -> Place Monument on Pedestal (Peach) A (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random)
  • Pick Up on Egg-shaped Monument (Yellow) (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random) -> Place Monument on Pedestal (Yellow) (25s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n, Random)

Mental Lock #3 - Obtain the fruit of immortality.[]

MaiN 2 Mental Lock 3

Starting from Mental Lock #3, the scene where the player is in becomes the Real Ikume Shrine. New inspectable objects here are: Ashes, Chozuya, Guardian Dog (Left), Guardian Dog (Right), Arch, Bell, and four Pedestals, being identified as Pedestal (Back Left), (Front Left), (Back Right), (Front Right) respectively.

To unlock Mental Lock #3, Chozuya needs to be investigated. After briefly inspecting its surroundings, the player will find a pickaxe that was brought here from the ShovelForge world. So performing Dig on Chozuya to finish the move. Completing this action does not give the player any TIMIE. After executing this option, Chozuya will be destroyed.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #3:

  • Dig on Chozuya (66s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n)

Mental Lock #4 - Rescue Iris.[]

MaiN 2 Mental Lock 4

To unlock the last Mental Lock, the only thing you need to do is find Iris and choose Give Fruit of Immortality. Although this will clear the Somnium directly, this option will consume 150s. If the player wants to keep the remaining time not to reach zero at the end and there is no TIMIE suitable for use, investigate other objects nearby and choose an option that consumes 10s to obtain a TIMIE. The random TIMIE obtained at this time is enough to reduce the time consumed by Give Fruit of Immortality to a short enough time.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #4:

  • Give Fruit of Immortality on Iris (150s[10], [20] or strongest 1/n)

TIMIE Pool[]

The following is the pool of TIMIEs that spawn during PSYNCIN' IN THE PaiN. Certain choices in the Somnium will drop a random selection of TIMIE from this pool, "Pool MaiN:2". During the first 3 minutes, there is an 80% chance of a [10] or [20] TIMIE dropping, a nearly 7% chance of a x2 TIMIE, and a 13% chance for a large fraction TIMIE. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the x2 TIMIE is removed while the large fractions are increased to have a collective 80% chance of dropping, with the exception of the 1/10 TIMIE at 5% and the other [10] and [20] in the low chances. In the last 90 seconds, the chances for a 1/10 TIMIE increased up to 50%, and the remainder TIMIE decrease to a 10% chance each. This particular TIMIE pool contains a slew of useful TIMIEs assorted across its categories, with the x2 only present in the first half and not readily available, and with the best TIMIE constantly increasing to exceedingly likely odds of dropping.

Objects of Interest[]

This Somnium is made up of two versions. One version is a ShovelForge rendition of Ikume Shrine, with blocks and glitches all abound. The other version is a realistic rendition of Ikume Shrine, with the appropriate models found throughout. As such, the Objects of Interest will be divided in two, as your actions vary depending on which rendition you're on.

Ikume Shrine[]

Object Description
Availability Action Cost TIMIE Effect
Iris Iris Sagan, laying unconscious on the stone slab. Her condition gets critical by the minute.
Mental Lock #1 Wake Her Up 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba attempts to wake Iris up, to no avail. She suggests to Date that they try something else instead.
Talk to Her 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba attempts to ask Iris about the fruit of immortality, and where to find it. She doesn't respond, and Aiba states that they are draining her stamina and wasting their time.
Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Date asks why they can't wake Iris up, and Aiba responds by saying that if they try to do so forcefully, they may end up mentally and physically exhausting her, assuming she can even wake up. Date takes note of Iris's Core above her, realizing it's the same one as last time. Despite this, Aiba states it's best not to strain her even in her Somnium, so they decide to leave her be.
Egg-shaped Monument A yellow egg-shaped monument, placed within the doors to the Shrine. Date notes that it looks like a sugar cube to him.
Mental Lock #1 Dig 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba states that she can't dig into it without a pickaxe. Date suggests chopping it with her hands, but she declares it's impossible.
Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba describes the monument as egg-shaped, with a pattern of a snake carved in it and with opals placed in the center. She wonders what meaning this could have to Iris, while Date thinks it looks like cheese cubes.
Place on Pedestal 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba grabs the monument and takes it to the pedestal near the iris ungicularis. She notes that placing the monument there would cut off the beam of light passing through it. Date states it reminds him of a movie, while Aiba declares it should remind him of Iris's last Somnium. With the monument in place, a beam extends as it passes to Pedestal A, then Pedestal B, and then over the chozuya. While Date is surprised, Aiba realizes that the light is almost making a pentagram, and notes that they must interact with the chozuya in order to finish it.
This action causes a beam of light to appear!
Chozuya A chozuya, where people go to cleanse themselves before entering the shrine. The pool of water contains a dragon-shaped faucet, and a roof covers it from the weather.
Mental Lock #1 only Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:

As Aiba investigates the chozuya, THIS MAN appears from the water, floating upwards, and then descends back down into the pool.

If THIS MAN was not discovered in MaiN: 1:

Detail:
Aiba is surprised at finding THIS MAN, and when Date asks, she tells him about the urban legend of THIS MAN, who appears in the dreams of many unrelated people. She offers to go into more detail later, but Date rejects her offer.

If THIS MAN was discovered in MaiN: 1:

Detail:
Aiba considers herself lucky at finding THIS MAN again, enthusiastically showing Date. He wonders if that's the reaction she should have about seeing him here.

As Aiba investigates the chozuya, GRAY appears from the water, floating upwards, and then descends back down into the pool.

Stick your hand in it 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

With Beam of Light only:
Detail:
Aiba sticks her hand inside the chozuya, and as she searches, a monument pops out of it, the roof falling off. She notes that the monument could be placed by the light, completing the pentagram, and Date orders her to do so. But before they have a chance, a UFO and an Elite appear, which Aiba notes that these might represent Iris's insecurities, as they wreak havoc around the shrine, destroying the chozuya and the irises. They realize that a yellow pedestal remains in front of the arch, and that they must complete the pentagram in order to dispel them. They proceed, worrying about attempting trial and error.
This action unlocks Mental Lock #1!
Iris Ungicularis A circle of iris ungicularis, known as the winter iris, as they surround a stone monument. A pedestal rests by the flowers and the monument, where a beam of light is striking it. Aiba recognizes them as the flowers she saw in the last Psync.
Mental Lock #1 Dig 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
As Aiba complains at not having the right tools to dig up the flowers, Date tells her that she should just be able to pluck them with her hands. She proceeds to strike with her hands, and suddenly the "iris ungicularis" item is let loose, and Date reconfirms that the tool wasn't the problem. Aiba is relieved that she does not need to dig anymore, but Date tells her to be ready regardless.
Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Without Beam of Light:
Detail:
Aiba notes that a beam of light is passing right on top of this pedestal, and Date states that, if a monument was on the pedestal, the Iris Beam would hit it. Realizing there's nothing more they can do, Date tells Aiba to bring the monument to the Iris Beam. She asks Date to stop calling it the Iris Beam, and when he asks what else to refer to this "light beam," she tells him to just call it that.
With Beam of Light:
Detail:
Aiba states that there is nothing they can do there now, while Date declares they should examine the chozuya.
Arch An arch that acts as the entrance to the Shrine, a rainbow wall shining in its center. Date states that the arch actually called a "torii."
Mental Locks #1 & #2 Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba states that they shouldn't pass through this gate, while Date states that they shouldn't leave Iris behind.
Pedestal A A yellow pedestal on the left side of the shrine, with a monument placed on top of it. Date states that it looks like an almond tofu on top of a rice cake.
Mental Lock #1 only Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Without Beam of Light:
Detail:
Aiba notes that it's the same kind of monument they saw in the previous Psync. Date asks if she can move it, but as she tries to do so, Aiba says that she can't. They realize they most likely need it there for something.
With Beam of Light:
Detail:
Aiba and Date realize that the monument interacts with the beam of light, meaning there is no need to move it.
Pedestal B A yellow pedestal on the right side of the shrine, with a monument placed on top of it.

Pedestal C A lantern, resting on the left side of the shrine. Aiba calls it a pedestal, but Date is not sure he can agree with that.
Mental Lock #1 only Investigate 10s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba notes that this fixture is typically used as a lantern within shrines, but Date wonders what they can use it for instead. Aiba notes that the yellow pedestals have monuments on them, but there are no monuments to place on this lantern, to which they conclude that this lantern is meaningless.
Shrine Door The shrine doors, which Aiba assumes leads to the hall of worship inside. They note how ornate the doors are, thinking that the contractor must've had a hell of a time making it.
Mental Locks #1 (with Beam of Light) and #2 Dig 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
As Aiba notes that the inside of the shrine looks suspicious, Date asks her to make a hole by "drilling the pickaxe in." In turn, Aiba uses her own body to drill into the door, her head spinning at the gate. It ultimately fails, and Aiba wonders why she listened to his stupid idea.
Open 30s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba attempts to open it, to no avail. They realize they must attempt some other way to open it.
Egg-shaped Monument (Yellow) A yellow egg-shaped monument, lying on the floor by itself.
Mental Lock #2 Investigate 10s
Detail:
Aiba notes that the monument is yellow, and the two realize that the only place they can place this monument is the yellow pedestal by the arch.
Pick Up 25s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Without Monument in Inventory:
Detail:
Aiba picks the monument, asking where to place it.
With Monument in Inventory:
Detail:
Aiba apologizes to Date about being unable to carry multiple objects at once, as those are her specifications in the Somnium. Date claims that if a bug tester found this out, they would be pissed off, and then states that it's best to place the monument they have on hand and come back later. Aiba thanks him for his open-mindedness to the Somnium's specs.
Egg-shaped Monument (Blue) A blue egg-shaped monument, lying on the floor by itself.
Mental Lock #2 Investigate 10s
Detail:
Aiba notes that the monument is blue, but Date points out that there are plenty of blue pedestals around. She responds by saying that, to create a pentagram properly, they need to make the shape symmetrical, and so Date takes note of the hint.

Inspecting either dog statue twice will have Aiba bark like a dog, while inspecting thrice will have Date ask what it was that she said before, which she dismisses.
Mental Lock #2 Investigate 10s
Detail:
Aiba notes that the guardian dog looks strange, while Date asks if it's even a guardian dog at all. Aiba wonders if it's a result of a bug, but Date mishears her as "pug" instead, as she states she's not talking about the breed. Date wonders why she's making things difficult, while she throws the question back at him.
Place Monument 25s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

With Blue Monument in Inventory:
Detail:
Aiba places the Monument on the guardian dog, but it glitches out and slips down to the floor. They note that perhaps they cannot place a monument there.
All 5 monuments must be placed on
Pedestal (Blue) A,
Pedestal (Blue) C,
Pedestal (Peach) A,
Pedestal (Peach) C,
and Pedestal (Yellow):
If the monuments are on the wrong pedestals:
Detail:
The beam of light from Iris's core will form a misaligned pentagram, and the UFO and Elite will attack Aiba, knocking the yellow monument off. As Date wonders what went wrong, Aiba tells him that the placement of the monuments must match the golden ratio, otherwise it's not a true pentagram. She tells him to try again with symmetrical placements.

If the monuments are on the right pedestals:

Detail:
The beam of light from Iris's core will form a perfect pentagram. The magic given by the pentagram makes the UFO and the Elite to panic, as they shoot at the ground, causing a massive explosion. As a result, the ShovelForge world is destroyed, and Aiba is taken to the realistic rendition of Ikume Shrine.

But Date nonchalantly states that there's a pickaxe on the ground, and as Aiba looks, she finds a Lvl. 255 Pickaxe on the back of the chozuya. Aiba wonders why it's there, and why it looks different than before, and Date states that maybe Iris left it for them to use. With the newly acquired pickaxe, Aiba strikes the chozuya, exploding upon contact. With this, rain comes down, making the sprout in the ashes grow into a tree bearing the fruit of immortality. Aiba picks a fruit, and together, the two decide to head quickly towards Iris to save her.

Mental Locks #3 & #4 Bow 66s ?

(Pool MaiN:2)

Detail:
Aiba exclaims that usually you bow before entering through an arch. Date claims he's never heard of it, but Aiba rebuts that it's because he doesn't concern himself with tradition. As Date claims that "It's the thought that counts," Aiba rebuts again, stating he doesn't exercise much thought. After their banter, Aiba bows to the arch, and the arch bows back, falling to the floor before picking itself back up. Sure enough, a 5 yen coin appears as she tosses it to the offering box, surprising her. Date asks for even more coins from her heart, and as Aiba sticks out her hand, a fountain of coins flows out into the offering box, leaving Date in awe. Hidden Item[]

  • The hidden item appears once you arrive at the Real Ikume Shrine, in Mental Lock #3 onwards. It is located inside the shrine, placed where the seed for the fruit of immortality was located.

Trivia[]

  • In the original release of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 2 and PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 1 both contain appearances of THIS MAN through your actions in the Somnium. The dialogue for discovering THIS MAN in MaiN: 2 changes depending on whether you found him in MaiN: 1 or not. Finding him in both instances gives you the achievement "The Dream Wanderer."
    • The dialogue within MaiN: 2 about THIS MAN changes based on whether the player found THIS MAN in MaiN: 1 in any single timeline run in the story. Even if the player only found THIS MAN in MaiN: 1 when going down Branch BB (Resolution Route) and not when going down Branch BA (Iris Route), the dialogue will still change, and Aiba will react as if she's finding THIS MAN for the second time.
    • THIS MAN also appears in the Somnium PSYNCIN' IN THE CAPTaiN as an image on one of the bottles in the kitchen top. There's no player input that can have the characters notice THIS MAN, and this appearance of him doesn't contribute to getting the achievement.
      Psyncin_in_the_Main_request_2

Psyncin in the Main request 2

Video footage of "Gray" from the Game Pass release.

    • In the Game Pass version of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES, released for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass on PC, appearances of THIS MAN is removed from both Somnia. Instead, he is replaced with "Gray", a strange alien face. All lines referencing THIS MAN were removed, and the achievement obtained for Gray is renamed "The Dream Invader" instead.
  • The pickaxe that Aiba and Date find is the Lvl. 255 pickaxe that can also be found in PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 1, but only when doing the set of choices that lead to Branch BB (Resolution Route), which is not where PSYNCIN' IN THE MaiN: 2 is located.
  • If you examine either of the guardian dog statues, and then examine either statue again, Aiba will say, "This reminds me of Nagito. You should refer to him as Ultimate Lucky Student." This is a reference to Nagito Komaeda from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, who is one of the characters to bear the title "Ultimate Lucky Student" in the series. The Japanese word for the guardian dog statue is "komainu," which sounds similar to Nagito's last name, "Komaeda."[1]
AI: The Somnium Files and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair spoilers here!
  • Fans have noted that the character of Nagito bears notable connections to Iris herself, potentially another reason for the reference in this Somnium. Nagito has an unhealthy obsession with "hope," which is one of the definitions to the "winter iris" in the language of flowers. Additionally, Nagito has two illnesses, lymphoma cancer and frontotemporal dementia, with similar effects to Iris's brain tumor, such as social impairment and a short life expectancy.[1]
  • Interacting with the arch within the Real Ikume Shrine will have the pair comment on how the shrine appears to be understaffed and not well-maintained. If the state of the arch is similar to how it appears in the real world in present day, it could be an accurate assessment of Ikume Shrine, especially considering the shrine's priest is never seen, only his voice is heard.
