-Discover Iris's Secret!-
"A mysterious room, videos, and a strange device. You may be able to find the truth!"
—Somnium description

PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN is a dreamworld featured in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES, based on an unknown factory.

It is a Somnium world created from Iris Sagan's dream by the Psync System. ABIS explored this Somnium to gain information about the murder of Renju Okiura.

Mental Locks[]

Mental Lock #1[]

VaiN Mental Lock 1

The Somnium begins with the simple first Mental Lock, where the only two interactable objects are TV and Doors. You just need to interact with the TV. Investigating TV will give you two options, and choosing either option will give you a negative TIMIE.

A:Look at the blood.[]

Selecting Hit on TV will enter Branch A, a children's drawing of a mouse appears briefly on TV, and the scene changes to White Remains.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #1 Branch A:

  • Hit on TV (30s, x2)

B:Watch the murder.[]

Selecting Spin the Dial on TV will enter Branch B, and the scene changes to Blue Remains.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #1 Branch B:

  • Spin the Dial on TV (30s, x2)

Mental Lock #2[]

VaiN Mental Lock 2

A:Blow it up.[]

After entering Mental Lock #2, the scene becomes White Remains, and the interactive objects that appear are: Medicine Shelf, Gun, Mirror. A second TV appears, showing a children's drawing of a frog. The player need to try to create an explosion in this section. Since the player got a negative TIMIE before, it needs to be consumed here by performing the action with the fewest seconds first - Open on Doors.

From here, proceed with caution with selecting options as you may get a negative TIMIE after the action, worst case getting a x5 TIMIE, so avoiding options with bringing such TIMIE for you.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #2 Branch A:

  • Open on Doors (5sx2, 1/6) -> Investigate the Bottle on Medicine Shelf (35s, 1/6)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Open on Doors (5sx2, 1/6) -> Investigate the Bottle on Medicine Shelf (35s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)

B:Strangle it.[]

After entering Mental Lock #2, the scene becomes Blue Remains, and the interactive objects that appear are: Torso, Mirror, Gun. The player need to try to create a strangling incident in this section, imitating the events watched from TV. Since the player got a negative TIMIE before, it needs to be consumed here by performing the action with the fewest seconds first - Open on Doors. After performing the correct option to unlock Mental Lock #2, the player is rewarded with a positive TIMIE from Pool 1.

From here, proceed with caution with selecting options as you may get a negative TIMIE after the action, worst case getting a x5 TIMIE, so avoiding options with bringing such TIMIE for you.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #2 Branch B:

  • Open on Doors (5sx2 - 1/6) -> Choke on Torso (45s, Random)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Open on Doors (5sx2 - 1/6) -> Choke on Torso (45s1/6 or strongest 1/n, Random)

Mental Lock #3[]

VaiN Mental Lock 3

A:Tear and stab it.[]

The explosion changed the settings of objects in the room. The Medicine Shelf becomes no longer interactable, and the new objects are Reference Book, Operating Table, and the third TV. In the third TV, a children's drawing of a butterfly is shown on it.

There are two paths to choose from to unlock Mental Lock #3, one is Rip on the Reference Book, the other is Perform Surgery on the Operating Table. After the player executed the first correct action, the fourth TV appears, showing a children's drawing of a bird. The former option is divided into three steps, but each step takes less time; the other option has only two steps, but takes longer. If you want to choose the latter method, you must use TIMIE, otherwise the remaining time may be exhausted directly.

If you execute Rip on the Reference Book, then the Reference Book will disappear and the third TV will no longer be interactable, and then Locker and Gas Canister will appear in the scene; executing Open on the Locker will let Knife appear and Locker will no longer be interactable.

Similarly, Perform Surgery on the Operating Table will let the third TV no longer be interactable and Locker and Gas Canister will appear, but they are useless in this choice.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #3 Branch A:

  • Rip on the Reference Book (50s, 1/6) -> Open on the Locker (25s, 1/6) -> Throw the Knife (25s, 1/6)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Rip on the Reference Book (50s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Open on the Locker (25s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Throw the Knife (25s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)
  • Perform Surgery on the Operating Table (108s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Perform Surgery Again on the Operating Table (216s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)

B:Beat it to death.[]

The settings of objects in the room changed after the strangling imitation. The Torso collapses and becomes no longer interactable, and the new objects are Operating Table, the second TV, Medicine Bottle and Gun. First of all, you need to turn on the TV as before, watch the next murder video, and then imitate the killing method on a Torso. Doing so will let Shelf, the second Torso and Gas Canister appear, while TV becomes no longer interactable.

To imitate the whacking event, there are two paths to choose from to unlock Mental Lock #3, but both requires executing Turn the Dial on the TV first, so the murder recreating can become possible. One of them is Push on the Shelf, the other is Punch on Torso.

The former option is divided into two steps, but each step takes less time; the other option has only one step, but takes longer time. If you want to choose the latter method, you must use TIMIE, otherwise the large amount of remaining time will be exhausted.

If you execute Push on the Shelf, then an Iron Ball will appear. Choose Throw on it can unlock Mental Lock #3. After performing the correct action on Shelf, Iron Ball or Torso, they will no longer be interactable.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #3 Branch B:

  • Turn the Dial on the TV (40s, 1/6) -> Push on the Shelf (35s, 1/6) -> Throw on Iron Ball (40s, 1/6)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Turn the Dial on the TV (40s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Push on the Shelf (35s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Throw on Iron Ball (40s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)
  • Turn the Dial on the TV (40s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Punch on Torso (130s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)

Mental Lock #4[]

VaiN Mental Lock 4

A:Shoot and kill.[]

The destruction of the fourth painting on TV caused the props in the scene to change again, this time Knife disappeared, the fourth TV becomes no longer interactable, and new Oil Drum, Torso and the fifth TV appeared. In the fifth and final TV, a children's drawing of a cat is shown.

Unlocking Mental Lock #4 requires performing Shoot with Gun, which requires searching for bullets. The correct action to look for bullets is Look Inside on the Oil Drum. After performing this action, the Oil Drum will no longer be interactable.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #4 Branch A:

  • Look Inside on the Oil Drum (60s, 1/6) -> Shoot with Gun (99s, 1/6)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Look Inside on the Oil Drum (60s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Shoot with Gun (99s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)

B:Shoot to death.[]

The settings of objects in the room changed after the whacking. The Torso collapses and becomes no longer interactable, the third TV and a Worn Out Reference Book appeared. Like the previous one, you are required to turn on the TV as before, watch the murder video, imitate the killing method on a Torso. Doing so will let a Locker appear, while TV becomes no longer interactable.

This time, no new Torso spawns, the target the player needs to try to attack is the Mirror, which reflects a Torso. To imitate the shooting event, the player just need to inspect Locker and select Open on it. The knife flying out of the Locker will create a chain reaction that will eventually cause the objects on the ceiling to move and destroy the mirror, unlocking Mental Lock #4.

In summary, to unlock Mental Lock #4 Branch B:

  • Turn the Dial on the TV (50s, 1/6) -> Open on Locker (95s, 1/6)

A possible optimal path for better TIMIE can be:

  • Turn the Dial on the TV (50s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6) -> Open on Locker (95s1/6 or strongest 1/n, 1/6)

TIMIE Pools[]

The following are the pools of TIMIEs that spawn during PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN. Certain choices in the Somnium will drop a random selection of TIMIE from either of these pools, "Pool 1" and "Pool 3".

For Pool 1, during the first 3 minutes, the standard spread of TIMIE values start off with the neutral types of TIMIEs being the most common, the larger TIMIE values just below them, and the smallest and most useful range of TIMIEs at around 5% chance of appearing. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the large-value TIMIEs, [40] and [50], decrease in probabilty from 18% to 7%, while the best TIMIEs increase from 5% to 22%. In the last 90 seconds, the [50] TIMIE is removed completely, and the best TIMIEs increase from 22% to 38%.

Time Span 360s-180s 180s-90s 90s-0s
TIMIE Value 1/2 [30] 1/3 1/4 [40] [50] 1/5 1/7 [20] 1/8 [10] 1/2 1/3 [20] 1/4 [30] 1/5 [10] [40] 1/7 1/8 [50] 1/3 1/4 1/5 [10] 1/7 [20] 1/8 [30] 1/2 [40]
Percentage 28.30% 18.87% 14.15% 9.43% 9.43% 9.43% 4.72% 1.89% 1.89% 0.94% 0.94% 23.58% 23.58% 11.79% 9.43% 9.43% 4.72% 4.72% 4.72% 3.30% 2.36% 2.36% 19.35% 16.13% 12.90% 12.90% 9.68% 9.68% 6.45% 6.45% 3.23% 3.23%

For Pool 3, during the first 3 minutes, the odds of gaining the best TIMIEs are still lower while the weakest TIMIEs retain the highest chance. However, negative TIMIEs are added into the pool, and while 3x, 4x, and 5x TIMIEs have a combined total of 6% chance, the 2x TIMIE has a 17% chance by itself, making it common enough to appear at least once through a Somnium. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the negative TIMIEs drop considerably, with 3x, 4x, and 5x having a 2.5% chance while x2 has a 4% chance; likewise, the [50] TIMIE drops considerably from 13.5% to 2%, and most of the other TIMIEs increase to rebalance it. By the last 90s, the negative TIMIEs had been shrunk by half, and the more valuable TIMIEs have substantially increased.

Time Span 360s-180s 180s-90s 90s-0s
TIMIE Value 1/2 x2 [50] 1/3 [40] 1/4 [20] 1/5 [10] x3 x4 1/7 1/8 x5 1/2 1/3 [20] 1/4 [40] 1/5 [10] x2 1/7 1/8 [50] x3 x4 x5 [10] 1/3 1/4 [20] 1/5 1/7 1/8 1/2 [40] x2 [50] x3 x4 x5
Percentage 20.41% 17.01% 13.61% 10.20% 10.20% 6.80% 6.80% 3.40% 3.40% 3.40% 2.04% 1.36% 0.68% 0.68% 21.93% 21.93% 17.54% 8.77% 6.58% 4.39% 4.39% 4.39% 3.07% 2.19% 2.19% 1.32% 0.88% 0.44% 21.74% 16.30% 13.59% 13.59% 10.87% 8.15% 5.43% 2.72% 2.72% 2.72% 0.54% 0.54% 0.54% 0.54%

These two pools are designed so that, the less time the player has to clear the Somnium, the more likely that they'll obtain useful TIMIEs that can dramatically cut down on the amount of time spent, and the less likely they are at obtaining higher-value TIMIEs or encounter negative TIMIEs.

Objects of Interest[]

Unlike most Somnia in the game, PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN is unique in which the room itself, named Remains, drastically changes based on the story branch, which splits right at the beginning of the Somnium itself, changing into either White Remains in the A Path and Blue Remains in the B Path. While it does contain Mental Locks, the Somnium progresses more specifically through either 5 Child's Drawings (for the A Path) or 4 Murder Videos (for the B Path). Only two items are available at the very beginning, with only one of them lasting the entire Somnium.

Remains[]

Object Description
Availability Action Cost TIMIE Effect
TV An old CRT television sitting in the middle of an empty room.
1st Child's Drawings/
No Murder Witnessed
Hit 30s x2
Detail:
Before hitting the TV, Aiba mentions how it's an old-fashioned approach to making the TV work, which Date counters by saying that it's an old-fashioned TV to begin with. Once hit, an image appears on the TV screen: a child's drawing of a rat, which eventually becomes crumbled up and stained with blood. After that image is seen, an RGB test plays on the Somnium, after which the entire room morphs into a crude papercraft representation of the room. Date determines that it could be a drawing made by Iris, but Aiba suggests they should continue exploring before jumping to conclusions.

This action ruins the 1st Child's Drawing, leading into White Remains.

Spin the Dial 30s x2
Detail:
Turning the dial changes channel to a video where a blank silhouette, wearing the picture of a woman, is strangled to death by a blue figure, with a red figure seen in the background. The Somnium goes static, and once it returns to normal, the entire room is given color, with objects appearing all around. Aiba recognizes the image on the silhouette as that of one of the first victims of the Original Cyclops Serial Killings. Date, shocked, wonders what Iris could be hiding in this Somnium.

This action leads to witnessing the 1st Murder, leading into Blue Remains.

Doors A set of double doors at the entrance of the room.
All Somnium Stages Tackle 10s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to tackle the door open will yield no results. Date yells out at every hit Aiba strikes at the door, which annoys her.
Open 5s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to open the door yields no results. Aiba suggests that the door is not something they should worry about.

White Remains (A Path)[]

Progression in the A Path is dictated by how many Child's Drawings are ruined in the Somnium. With each drawing ruined, new objects are introduced. There are a total of 5 Drawings to ruin.

Object Description
Availability Action Cost TIMIE Effect
Medicine Shelf A shelf full of medical bottles and objects. At the top of the shelf is a CRT TV with a child's drawing of a frog appearing onscreen.
2nd Child's Drawing Investigate TV 50s Pool 1
Detail:
Investigating the TV will have Aiba notice the drawing of the frog onscreen. Date makes a comment about how Aiba could "croak" due to the drawing. When Aiba asks if that was a joke, he states that he was wondering what the meaning of the drawing is. Eventually, the two conclude that there is no deeper meaning behind it.
Investigate the Bottle 35s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to investigate a large bottle on the shelf will result in Aiba's hand slipping as the nitroglycerin bottle explodes on the floor. The explosion causes a chain reaction, in which all the nitroglycerin on the shelf explodes, up to the top of the shelf where the CRT television is. Upon the explosion, the Somnium goes into an RGB test, and once it stops, Aiba and Date discover the room has changed, noting how dangerous this Somnium seems to be.

This action ruins the 2nd Child's Drawing.

Smell 20s Pool 3
Detail:
Smelling the contents of the shelf will have Aiba pick up on a sweet scent, similar to syrup or almonds. They wonder if this means the bottles of the shelves either contain a sweetener or nitroglycerin. Aiba mentions that nitroglycerin is usually mixed with acetone to lower the chemical's sensitivity to explode from a slight impact. While Date notes the name "acetone," Aiba wonders how Iris is aware of the handling of dangerous chemicals.
Reference Book A butterfly reference book, laying on a table by the wall. It includes various pictures of butterflies as reference.
3rd Child's Drawing onwards Throw 25s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to throw the book will have it slip through the floor. Date comments how it's similar to quantum mechanics, using the example "when you touch a wall, your hand has an almost impossibly small chance of going through!" Aiba notes this is a phenomenon that will happen regularly in this Somnium, despite believing that Iris shouldn't be familiar with quantum mechanics. Once that's done, the book returns to its position.
3rd Child's Drawing Rip 50s 1/6
Detail:
Aiba comments that it would be difficult to tear the book due to its thickness, but with enough strength, she manages to rip it open. Once done, the image of the butterfly on the nearby TV is torn in half. An RGB test plays on the Somnium, and more objects appear in the room. Date mentions the Butterfly Effect, alluding about how the more actions they take, the less time they have.

This action ruins the 3rd Child's Drawing.

3rd Child's Drawing onwards Read 25s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba inspects the book, noting how it is a book on butterflies and moths. She points out that there is no name written on the book itself.
Locker A locker at the back of the room.
4th Child's Drawing onward Open 25s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to open the locker will have a knife fly right in front of Aiba's face, hitting the other side of the room. Aiba mentions that she would've been stabbed if this were the Delta Princess, while Date wonders why the locker was booby-trapped in the first place. With nothing inside the locker, Aiba asks Date if they should examine the knife instead.

This action progresses further into ruining the 4th Child's Drawing.

Listen 35s Pool 3
Detail:
Listening to the locker will have Aiba note the sound of gears spinning or some other metal. Date asks her to be careful just in case.
Peek 45s Pool 3
Detail:
Taking a peek inside the locker, Aiba notes that she saw a light reflection for just a moment. Noting that it's some sort of metal, Date asks her to be careful with what's inside.
Knife A knife that flew out of the locker when Aiba opened it.
4th Child's Drawing
(after choosing Open on Locker)
Seppuku 50s Pool 3
Detail:
Selecting to seppuku will have Aiba and Date to act out as two samurai, with Samurai Aiba refusing to commit seppuku, while Samurai Date offers her to speak a final haiku. Aiba gets irritated at Date's impression, wondering if the Somnium is affecting him in some way, to which he rebukes. She ultimately refuses to take the action.
Push In 75s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to push the knife in will have Aiba punch the knife instead, with full force. After shouting in pain, she states that the knife can't be pushed in further than it already has.
Throw 25s 1/6
Detail:
Aiba attempts to lightly chuck the knife backwards, but it ends up flying off into the distance, landing on the TV with the drawing of the bird. The knife slips through the TV, and the image changes to a knife stuck on the bird in the drawing. An RGB test plays on the Somnium, and even more objects appear in the room. Date begins to understand the Somnium more, while Aiba is left confused.

This action ruins the 4th Child's Drawing.

Operating Table An operating table lying in the center of the room.
3rd Child's Drawing onwards Sleep 162s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to go to sleep will have Aiba rest on the operating table, but the thought of someone killing or modifying her on the table makes her restless. As she gets off, Date wonders if they would modify her into a grasshopper or a spider.
Investigate 30s Pool 3
Detail:
Investigating the operating table results in Aiba noticing the fabric on the surface is frayed from use. Date is shocked to learn that surgery was done in this room, while Aiba suggests it could be something much worse.
3rd Child's Drawing Perform Surgery 108s 1/6
Detail:
Aiba asks Date for whom she would be operating on, to which he responds by saying that she should act it out to see if a memory is reproduced. After some time, Aiba comments on how she feels like she's in a "medical dragon team." Once done, the image of the butterfly on the nearby TV is torn in half. An RGB test plays on the Somnium, and more objects appear in the room.

This action ruins the 3rd Child's Drawing.

4th Child's Drawing
(after choosing Perform Surgery)
Perform Surgery Again 216s
Detail:
Aiba asks Date why they're doing surgery again, while Date simply just encourages her to try her best. Aiba focuses as she performs surgery again, along with a variety of actions (as she "cannot simply follow the textbook"), such as: jumping and cheering, dancing and spinning on the spot, bench pressing, rapidly hitting a button, and cutting vegetables. Once done, the image of a bird from the new TV is stabbed with a knife. An RGB test plays on the Somnium, and even more objects appear in the room. With all these new items, Date concludes that they must be near the end of the Somnium.

This action ruins the 4th Child's Drawing.

Oil Drum An oil drum in the middle of the room. The lid is semi-open, but the insides are indiscernible with mosaic censorship.
5th Child's Drawing Look Inside 60s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to look inside the oil drum will have Aiba stare at the mosaic censorship. As she keeps staring, an RGB test image obscures her view, and once it's over, the old drum has been tipped over with oil splattered on the floor. On top of the oil, 6 bullets can be found.

With this action, Aiba gains Bullets.

Kick 40s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to kick the drum yields no results, as it stays in place despite the kick. Date asks if it's heavy or if it's built into the floor, and wonders what could be inside.
Take the Lid Off 60s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to take the lid off the drum yields no results, as the lid doesn't budge despite Aiba's pulling. Date suggests that perhaps they don't need to take the lid off.
Gun A revolver gun held in place by a vise. It appears as a real gun, despite the unnatural appearance of the room itself.
2nd Child's Drawing onwards Look Down the Barrel 44s Pool 3
Detail:
Looking down the gun's barrel will have Aiba conclude that the inside of the barrel is dark. Date suggests that she bring her face closer to look inside, which she obliges. As she faces the barrel of the gun head-on, she slowly inches closer, and closer, and closer, and closer.... and then Date yells "Bang!" This prank, however, doesn't work, as Aiba was too focused on the gun to even hear what Date was saying. Date tells her that he didn't believe she would fall for it, and apologizes, much to Aiba's confusion.
Remove 55s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to pull the gun out of the vice results in failure, as the gun doesn't budge from its place. Date suggests that Aiba should try to loosen it, but she concludes its impossible due to the papercraft state it's in. Date wonders what the meaning of this gun is.
2nd Child's Drawing onwards (Without Bullets) Shoot 22s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to shoot the gun yields no result. Before pulling the trigger, Aiba notes that there are no bullets inside. Once the attempt fails, the two decide to look for a bullet.
5th Child's Drawing (With Bullets) 99s 1/6
Detail:
Date notes that they could use the bullets they gained from the oil drum, and with that, Aiba loads the gun. With the gun facing the TV with the drawing of the cat, Aiba pulls the trigger. The bullet flies straight into the cat's head, and after an RGB test image, the cat has gained a bullet hole. Once that's done, a video of a blue figure kissing a woman with the face of So Sejima appears on screen.

This action ruins the 5th Child's Drawing, and awakens Iris from her dream!

Mirror A full-bodied mirror standing next to the first CRT TV. Aiba's reflection can be seen on the mirror.
2nd Child's Drawing onwards Punch 25s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba wonders if she can break the mirror at all with a punch, which Date believes she can't. Despite this, he insists that she tried to anyways. The attempt to break the mirror fails, proving Date's point, and making Aiba wonder what the point of that action was.
Talk 50s Pool 1
Detail:
Talking to the mirror will have Aiba strike up a conversation with her own reflection, making fun of Date as she calls him "troublesome." Date tells her to stop.
Look 35s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba finds her own reflection when looking at the mirror. Date begins to wonder what Aiba's true form is, as her reflection only shows the appearance made from Date's mind. Once Aiba states that it's "whatever you imagine," Date concludes that Aiba's spirit itself is her true form.
TV [Butterfly] An analog TV with a drawing of a butterfly onscreen.
3rd Child's Drawing Investigate 10s Pool1
Detail:
Investigating the TV will have Aiba and Date note the child's drawing of the butterfly. Date hopes this Somnium isn't based on Iris's childhood.
Turn the Dial 30s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to turn the dial on the TV results in failure, as the image of the butterfly remains onscreen.
Hit 30s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to hit the TV will cause no changes in the screen itself. However, the laughter of an unknown child resounds from the TV itself. Aiba finds it creepy, while Date comments on how he almost pissed himself at the sound.
TV [Bird] A retro TV with a drawing of a bird onscreen.
4th Child's Drawing Hit 35s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to hit the TV will cause no changes in the screen itself. However, the laughter of an unknown child resounds from the TV itself. Aiba finds it creepy, while Date notes how unusual it is to hear this in this situation.
Turn the Dial 35s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to change the channel on the TV results in failure, as the image of the bird remains onscreen.
Investigate 10s Pool 1
Detail:
Investigating the TV will have Aiba and Date note the child's drawing of the bird. Date wonders if this was drawn by Iris, but Aiba is unable to confirm it.
TV [Cat] An old TV with a drawing of a cat onscreen.
5th Child's Drawing Hit 40s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to hit the TV will cause no changes in the screen itself. However, the heavy breathing of an unknown child resounds from the TV itself. Date notes how abnormal the sound is, especially from a child.
Investigate 10s Pool 1
Detail:
Investigating the TV will have Aiba and Date note the child's drawing of the cat. Date notes how out of place the drawing is compared to the room.
Turn the Dial 40s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to turn the dial on the TV results in failure, as the image of the bird remains onscreen aside from static.
Torso A naked dummy mannequin, with only a torso and a head, placed upon a stand.
5th Child's Drawing Choke 40s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba attempts to choke the mannequin's neck, despite her distaste for it. It ultimately results in nothing.
Talk 70s Pool 1
Detail:
Date suggests to talk to the torso, seeing as it could potentially talk back in this Somnium, even with a Southern accent. Aiba runs with it, asking the torso about Iris in a Southern accent herself. She pretends like the mannequin responded to her, but Date sees through her joke.
Punch 30s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba throws out a punch at the torso, which Date compliments on. However, the punch yields no results, which Aiba states she wasted a good punch on nothing.
Gas Canister A common gas container set near the shelves.
4th Child's Drawing onwards Kick 30s [20]
Detail:
Attempting to kick it will result in Aiba limping in pain from the impact. Date encourages her, stating that he believes in her, while Aiba states that he's a masochist.
Smell 30s [20]
Detail:
Aiba mentions that the smell of the gas canister is sweet and sour, and how it could contain a ketone, such as acetone. Date wonders if the acetone has some relation to A-set and Iris, but Aiba concludes its more likely a coincidence.
Open the Valve 30s [20]
Detail:
Attempting to open the valve will yield no results, as the canister is rusted shut. Date wonders if it's meant to be closed.

Blue Remains (B Path)[]

Progression in the B Path in the Somnium is dictated first by Witnessing a Murder and then by Recreating said Murder. With each of these steps fulfilled, new objects are introduced. There are 3 Murders to Witness and 3 Murders to Recreate, giving a total of 6 steps to complete.

Torso [1st victim] A naked dummy mannequin, with only a torso and a head, placed upon a stand. A rope hanging from the ceiling rests on its neck. Date wonders if it can be called a torso if it has the head included.
Witness 1st Murder Push 65s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to push the mannequin will yield no results. Date claims this is due to the object having its guard up, and needing to loosen them up first. He suggests a massage as his traditional response, to which Aiba states that she should choke Date for his lack of help. He deflects it, stating that perhaps the torso is into choking.
Hit 25s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to punch the torso will yield no results, which Date claims is due to not having enough muscle mass and should do some training. When Aiba points out that she doesn't have muscles, Date exclaims that this is what he just said. Aiba hopes to have enough muscle mass to punch Date in the face one day.
Choke 45s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to choke the torso will have Aiba put all her strength into its neck, her eyes dilating as she does so. Both Date and Aiba's visions start to blur, and eventually the pair fall unconscious. Once they wake, the mannequin is on the floor, its head separated from the torso, and the environment has changed slightly. Date is tired already, but knows he has no choice but to continue.

This action recreates the 1st Murder.

Operating Table An operating table lying in the center of the room.
Recreate 1st Murder onward Sleep 162s 1/6
Perform Surgery 144s x2
Detail:
Aiba asks Date for whom she would be operating on, to which he states that she should pretend to operate on someone. Aiba attempts to do pretend, but this action yields nothing. Date thought he could trigger a memory, but Aiba suggests he abandon that line of thinking.
TV [2nd Video] An old television with static onscreen.
Recreate 1st Murder Turn the Dial 40s 1/6
Detail:
Turning the dial shows footage of the second Murder Video, where the victim was beaten to death with a rock in a mountain region, the blue and red silhouettes there. Aiba notes that this appears to be the second Cyclops victim. Date is confused, wondering how Iris is connected to the first Cyclops case. With more objects appearing in the room, they decide to continue exploring.

This action leads to witnessing the 2nd Murder.

Investigate 15s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to investigate will have Aiba comment on how she can see "the world beyond," while Date simply states it's static. When Aiba says that her generation hasn't seen static, Date remembers how she's supposed to be 5 years old. Aiba is pissed at this, saying that her mental age is 10 times her temporal age, to which Date remarks as that of a mature woman's.
Hit 40s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to hit the TV causes a woman's scream to come out of the machine upon impact. Aiba wonders how Iris knows all this.
Shelf The middle orange shelf, separated from the wall compared to the other 2 shelves.
Witness 2nd Murder onwards Pull 35s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to pull it will yield no results. Date wonders if maybe they should push it instead.
Push 35s 1/6
Detail:
Aiba notes how the shelf is sticking out from the rest of the set. Attempting to push it in will have Aiba struggle as she inches it closer. Once up against the wall, an iron ball rolls off the top right in front of Aiba. She wonders why the ball would be up there.

This action progresses in Recreating the 2nd Murder.

Iron Ball A heavy iron ball that fell off the shelf once it was pushed to position.
Choose Push on Shelf Balance On 50s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to balance on the iron ball will have Aiba stand on it with one foot as she holds her balance. She states she has impeccable balance due to the antennae on her head. Date is shocked to learn that the antennae are not hair strands, saying that it's kinda creepy. When Aiba threatens him with an augmented reality of her antennae rubbing on him, he starts praising them instead.
Kick 60s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to kick the iron ball will result in Aiba collapsing in pain as she holds her foot. Date tries calling for her several times, and by the third she responds that they must continue investigating, despite the horrible pain she's in. Date tells her she shouldn't have kicked so hard.
Choose Push on Shelf
(Witness 2nd Murder only)
Throw 40s 1/6
Detail:
Aiba wonders in which direction to throw the ball, to which Date points to the other end of the room. Noting how surprisingly light the ball is, Aiba throws it, heading towards the torso as it makes impact with its head. At that moment, Date is knocked unconscious, and once he wakes, he notes how it felt like the ball hit him in the head. With more objects appearing in the room, Date hopes he nears the end.

This action recreates the 2nd Murder.

Torso [2nd victim] A naked dummy mannequin, with only a torso and a head, placed upon a stand. Aiba notes that it's like a fashion mannequin.
Witness 2nd Murder Punch 130s 1/6
Detail:
Choosing to punch the torso will have Aiba hit it square in the temple. The mannequin topples over to the floor, and Date's vision goes dark. Once he wakes, Aiba reassures him that there is no effect on his body, but Date states it hurts his soul. They note how there are new items around them, and Aiba calculates that they will be done soon.

This action recreates the 2nd Murder.

Choke 150s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba comments on Date's bad taste before he insists that she choke the mannequin. Attempting to do so will have Aiba put all her strength into its neck, her eyes dilating as she does so. However, this yields no results, and Date realizes that this kind of action isn't really working for this person, stating that they're into choking.
Push 100s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to push the mannequin will yield no results. Date claims this is due to the object not liking aggressive people, and that she must pull back and stop communication for a while. He suggests that the moment to strike is when your target is trying to avoid contact. When Aiba asks if this is the strategy he took with the cabaret girl, and how his plan went, Date goes quiet.
TV [3rd victim] An old-fashioned TV with static onscreen.
Recreate 2nd Murder Hit 50s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to hit the TV causes the voice of a woman panting and screaming to come out of the machine upon impact. Aiba is surprised at how many more memories like this Iris has in her mind. Date explains that memories can be mixed up and can come up with bizarre situations, but notes that these memories are too vivid to be made up.
Investigate 15s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to investigate the TV will have Aiba stare at the screen with her eyes crossing. She notes that nothing pops out when she does this, so when Date asks her what she sees without the filter, she responds with "Static!"
Turn the Dial 50s 1/6
Detail:
Turning the dial shows footage of the third Murder Video, where the victim was shot in the Harbor Warehouse District, the blue figure with the gun and the victim reaching towards the red figure. Aiba notes that this appears to be the third Cyclops victim. Aiba notes that perhaps Iris saw info online or on TV about the murders, but Date wonders if that could reproduce the circumstances of the murders. With no direct evidence on any information, they decide to continue exploring.

This action leads to witnessing the 3rd Murder.

Mirror A full-bodied mirror standing next to the first CRT TV. A mannequin torso can be seen on the mirror's reflection.
Witness 1st Murder onward Punch 25s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba wonders if she can break the mirror at all with a punch, which Date believes she can't. Despite this, he insists that she tried to anyways. The attempt to break the mirror fails, proving Date's point, and making Aiba wonder what the point of that action was.
Talk 55s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba asks the torso in the mirror if she can talk, and the torso mimics her response, with a different woman's voice. At first, Aiba shouts at it to stop copying her, which the torso does, and then she says that Date is a pervert, to which the torso repeats with vigor. Date wonders why he has to be called a pervert twice.
Look 30s Pool 1
Detail:
Looking at the mirror, Aiba notes that there is a torso on the reflection, which surprises Date, expecting her own reflection to appear. The pair wonder if there's any meaning to this.
Medicine Bottle A drug bottle that holds an unidentified liquid inside, placed on a table.
Recreate 1st Murder onwards Investigate 15s Pool 1
Detail:
Attempting to investigate will have Aiba point out that the bottle has no label. Without any information as to what is inside, they cannot determine if it's dangerous or not. They decide not to touch it, as even some things in Somnia are best left alone.
Smell 40s Pool 3
Detail:
When smelling the bottle, Aiba notes how it has a syrupy smell, like almonds. Date wonders if this is for a cake, but Aiba suggests it could be nitroglycerin, which, unless mixed with a certain substance, can explode upon light impact with anything. Date asks what the other substance is, to which she reveals is acetone. They ultimately decide to leave it alone.
Chug! 40s Pool 3
Detail:
Attempting to chug the bottle will have Aiba reprimanding Date for pressuring her into drinking alcohol. When he asks if it even is alcohol, Aiba states that she doesn't know, to which he orders her to drink for the investigation. Aiba claims Date is abusing his position of power and states she will set up a labor union in retaliation. Date notes how an A.I. union sounds like a dystopian story, but he decides to drop his order regardless.
Gas Canister A common gas container set near the shelves.
Witness 2nd Murder onwards Kick 30s [20]
Worn Out Reference Book A thick worn out illustration book on insects.
Recreate 2nd Murder Read 55s Pool 3
Detail:
Noting how the book has not been well-preserved, with the ink fading, Aiba attempts to read it. She realizes that the book is about insects, and gets so excited she starts panting. Date wonders if it belongs to Iris, to which Aiba is surprised that someone likes insects as much as she does, to the point that the book has worn out. The two then state that they can't prove this is Iris's, and that it's best to not conclude anything.
Rip 20s Pool 1
Detail:
Aiba comments that it's "more brittle than crumbly cheese" before easily ripping it in two. After that, the book disappears, with Date comparing it to melted-down grilled cheese.
Throw 15s Pool 3
Detail:
Aiba throws the book to make it fly away, but it disappears. Date wonders if the book was even that special.
Gun A revolver gun held upside-down in place by a vise on a railing, and a stick placed in the trigger guard. It appears as a real gun, despite the unnatural appearance of the room itself.
Witness 1st Murder onward Jump 20s Pool 3
Detail:
As Aiba prepares to jump, she begins by saying the name "Weekly Shonen––" before Date stops her. Her jump barely lifts her off the ground, and she comments that, as she is not a cyborg, she could not reach that height. Date reassures her that no one is blaming her.
Investigate 15s Pool 1
Detail:
Investigating will have Aiba note that the pistol is fixed upon a vise. They also note the long stick within the hole of the trigger guard.
Locker A locker resting at the back of the room.
Witness 3rd Murder Listen 35s Pool 3
Open 95s 1/6
Detail:
Attempting to open the locker will have a knife fly right in front of Aiba's face, hitting the gas container on the other side of the room. The explosion causes the stacked shelves to fall, which cases two pipes to lean and hit an iron ball, which rolls on the railing to hit a smaller iron ball, which falls into a lower railing, which hits metal ball, which rolls and falls into water, which explodes and sends the torso flying, which knocks a barrel right into a plank, which sends a crane across the rails, which hits a giant metal ball, which rolls and falls to another plank, which catapults the table and the nitroglycerin into the air, which explodes on the metal rail, which makes it bend down and send the crane back across the rail, which hits the stick inside the revolver trigger hole, which presses down on the gun's trigger, which sends out a bullet that breaks the mirror with the mannequin on it. With the 3rd murder recreated, a 4th murder is shown live, where the last victim is stabbed by the blue figure. Aiba and Date see the reflection on the glass shards on the floor, and they can see that the blue figure's face is identical to Date's.

This action recreates the 3rd Murder, and awakens Iris from her dream!

Hidden Item[]

  • The hidden item is found during Remains, in Mental Lock #1 before the environment changes to either White Remains or Blue Remains. It was located past the TV towards the left corner.

Trivia[]

  • The various mentions to the chemical "acetone" are correlated to Iris Sagan, or rather, her stage name A-set. In Japanese, Iris's fan-nickname is "Aseton" (rather than "Tesa"), in reference to the chemical "acetone."
  • Eldritch nightmare

    GAAAAAHHH!!!!

In the B path of the Somnium, the first three victims of the Cyclops Serial Killer appear as mannequins with photographs of the woman on their face, except for the last one, who is fully modeled. On the A path, this model is used again, except that it has So Sejima's head on it. This model is a beta model for Boss, repurposed into one of the victims.
  • When selecting "Perform Surgery" on the Operating Table in White Remains, Aiba states that she feels like she's part of a "medical dragon team." This is most likely a reference to Team Medical Dragon, a manga series that was adapted to a live-action show, involving a medical team of surgeons operating patients in Japan.[1]
  • Selecting "Talk" on the Torso in White Remains will have Aiba speak with an American Southern accent to the torso. In Japanese, she speaks with a Kansai dialect, common within the Kansai region in Japan, and commonly compared to the American Southern accent by game localizations.
  • When selecting "Jump" on the Gun in Blue Remains, Aiba will prepare to jump by saying "Weekly Shonen––" before being cut off by Date. This is a reference to the manga anthology magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, known for releasing weekly chapters of various shonen manga series published under the JUMP line.[2]
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES spoilers here!
  • Using a free cam modification, the player can look inside the Oil Drum with the censored covering that appears during White Remains. Inside is a mutilated body stuffed inside the Drum (recycled from So Sejima's dead body in the Ota Route). According to Somnium designer Akira Okada, he "packed it with a sense of mourning for someone [Saito] killed a long time ago, or one of the several people at Spike Chunsoft who were used as test subjects during the development of this game to see if Uchikoshi-san's trick would work." It's likely that this body is Manaka Iwai, whom Saito killed during his childhood (which is the basis for White Remains).[3]
