"The Vain Dream of Wealth and Splendor"[]

While not much of a philosophical idea in itself, "The Vain Dream of Wealth and Splendor" is a classic Chinese story that delves into various philosophical aspects of dreams and human nature. The story follows a scholar named Lu Sheng, who delves into a long-lasting dream 50-60 years long that gives him a new philosophical perspective in life. However, the dream in reality only lasts 2 hours, which brings into question the perception of time between the real world and a person's dreams.

In Somnium Files[]

In the Japanese version of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES, during the events of PSYNCIN' IN THE PaiN, when Aiba introduces Kaname Date to the new time perception ability implemented into the Psync System, she brings up "The Vain Dream of Wealth and Splendor" as a point of comparison. Date briefly retells the legend of a man living 50 years in his dreams while in reality very little time had actually passed. This story, in turn, heavily correlates to how the game AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES perceives the concept of dreams, letting characters like Date and Aiba manage to stay conscious inside another person's dream for a rather long time, while in reality only a maximum of 6 minutes can pass.
