TIMIE (タイミー), short for Time Induction Matter In Encephalon, is a game mechanic featured in AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES - nirvanA Initiative.

TIMIE is an ability available in a Somnium when Psyncing into a person's dreams. This mechanic gives the player the ability to change the amount of time any given action spends when activated. TIMIEs are obtained when selecting a choice with a TIMIE icon next to them, and they are kept within an inventory of 3 slots, where the player is free to select them to be used on a choice to affect the time.

Tutorial[]

Panda choices

When inspecting the Panda ride, the choices "Stop" and "Spin More" have a TIMIE each: one marked 1/2 and another marked [10]. The choice "Ride" has no TIMIE, and the player here already has a [30] TIMIE in their inventory at the top of the screen.

During a Somnium, you may encounter a choice that contains a purple icon next to its time value. After selecting this choice, once the action has been cleared, the player will obtain the TIMIE into their inventory. The player can hold up to 3 separate TIMIEs at once, and introducing a fourth TIMIE will remove the oldest one from the inventory. As such, it is beneficial for the player to continually use their TIMIE before overflowing their inventory.

To select a TIMIE, the player must toggle across the 3 inventory slots using the Bumper Buttons (L1 and R1 on Playstation / LB and RB on Xbox / L and R on Switch) or with the buttons "Z and C" on PC. When selecting, the indicator around the TIMIE will appear yellow, but the player must press the corresponding "Use" button to activate, turning the indicator red (X for Playstation / A for Xbox and Switch / Space for PC). Once the indicator is red, the TIMIE is active and can be applied to whichever choice the player chooses.

Different types of TIMIEs have different applications on a given choice. Fraction TIMIEs are a form of division, dividing the total amount of seconds by the given denominator. Higher TIMIEs like 1/2 and 1/3 are good at shortening the time on choices with low time values, while lower TIMIEs like 1/5 and beyond are great at drastically cutting down a large amount of time on a choice. The Fixed TIMIEs changes the amount of seconds a given choice makes, allowing for precise control over the amount of time spent. Higher TIMIEs like [50] and [40] are not very useful unless the choice cuts into the triple digits and the fraction TIMIEs available are not as effective, but lower TIMIEs like [20] or less are great at ensuring you are always spending minimal time when used on high-value choices.

The most dangerous types of TIMIEs are the Negative TIMIE. The Negative TIMIE multiply the amount of time spent on a choice, making you spend more time than normal on a choice. These TIMIE are dangerous, as the player has no control over them, and once obtained and placed in your inventory, they will be automatically be activated, forcing you to spend it. In the wrong situations, the player may find themselves stuck having to make a high-timed choice while a negative TIMIE is activated. Despite this, certain choices mandatory to clear a Somnium will force negative TIMIE on the player, either through randomization when assigning TIMIE values to each choice, or fixed to specific sections. However, there is a way to counter this effect.

The most beneficial tool to a player while traversing a Somnium is The Buffer Objects, or The Buffer Choices. What this Wiki describes as "Buffer Objects" are objects in a Somnium that can provide high-value TIMIE for a low-value amount of time spent. As an example, the player could find an object that can give them a [10] TIMIE when they spend 5 seconds on a choice. These objects serve two special functions:

  1. Obtain useful TIMIE when the player has run out of resources, or their selection is unfavorable (ex. a [10] TIMIE might be common).
  2. Use up a Negative TIMIE on a choice with a low value, preventing too much time being spent unfavorably (ex. a x2 TIMIE forced onto a 5 second choice, increasing it to just 10 seconds).

Most Somnia contain a "Buffer Object" somewhere within reach, but are generally objects that the player wouldn't actively seek out if needed. It could range from Doors around the perimeter of the map, objects that repeat often within that Somnium, or People who appear within the Somnium and can be interacted with. When starting a Somnium, it is usually in the player's best interest to find a Buffer Object as soon as possible (if available) so that they can have a good second strategy when progressing in the Somnium.

Types of TIMIE[]

The game contains 3 different types of TIMIEs: fraction TIMIE, fixed TIMIE, and negative TIMIE.

Fraction TIMIE[]

Fraction TIMIE, or Division TIMIE, are labeled as fractions such as 1/N. These fractions act as divisions upon the time spent, wherein the total time used is divided by the denominator of the fraction. The available fraction TIMIE are:

  • 1/2
  • 1/3
  • 1/4
  • 1/5
  • 1/6
  • 1/7
  • 1/8
  • 1/9
  • 1/10

Fixed TIMIE[]

Fixed TIMIE are labeled as integers placed within brackets, such as [N]. These TIMIE changes whatever the standard value of time is spent into the precise number found within the brackets. The available fixed TIMIE are:

  • [1]
  • [10]
  • [20]
  • [30]
  • [40]
  • [50]

Negative TIMIE[]

Negative TIMIE, or Multiplication TIMIE, are aggressive TIMIE potrayed as a multiplication, such as xN. These TIMIE multiply the total time to be spent by a value, ultimately spending more time than planned. These TIMIE act as a cursed effect that always activates for the player's next choice and cannot be de-selected. The available negative TIMIE are:

  • x2
  • x3
  • x4
  • x5
  • x6
  • x9 (cannot be used in a Somnium)
  • x10
  • x999

TIMIE Pools[]

Certain choices in the Somnia contain different TIMIE specific to their choices, while other choices pull from very specific pools of TIMIE. These pools have a specific list of TIMIE that can be dropped randomly into the choices, and the percentages of these TIMIE can change depending on how much time has passed. Here are the TIMIE pools as given.

Pool 1[]

Pool 1, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE1, is a standard TIMIE pool used in various Somnia. It is used in PSYNCIN' IN THE PaiN, PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN, PSYNCIN' IN THE SUSTaiN, and PSYNCIN' IN THE CURTaiN. In this pool, during the first 3 minutes, the standard spread of TIMIE values start off with the neutral types of TIMIEs being the most common, the larger TIMIE values just below them, and the smallest and most useful range of TIMIEs at around 5% chance of appearing. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the large-value TIMIEs, [40] and [50], decrease in probabilty from 18% to 7%, while the best TIMIEs increase from 5% to 22%. In the last 90 seconds, the [50] TIMIE is removed completely, and the best TIMIEs increase from 22% to 38%.

Pool 2[]

Pool 2, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE2, is a "standard" TIMIE pool used exclusively in PSYNCIN' IN THE REFRaiN, despite its standardized naming convention. This pool is composed entirely of the TIMIEs 1/2, 1/3, 1/9, and 1/10. During the first 3 minutes, The values 1/2 and 1/3 make up a 90% chance of appearing during drops. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the values even out, with 1/3 and 1/9 being 30% each, and 1/2 and 1/10 being 20% each. In the last 90 seconds, the 1/9 and 1/10 values, normally rare for any pool of TIMIEs, appear with 90% certainty. This exceedingly small TIMIE pool that provides only positive TIMIEs exists to counte-balance the Somnium's large scope and prevalent cases of present Negative TIMIEs alongside large time-spending choices. Since PSYNCIN' IN THE REFRaiN is very demanding in its use of time, the increase in chance for 1/9 and 1/10 values near the end can help players advance when the timer is dire.

Pool 3[]

Pool 3, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE3, is a standard TIMIE pool used in various Somnia. It is used in PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN, PSYNCIN' IN THE SUSTaiN, and PSYNCIN' IN THE CURTaiN. In this pool, during the first 3 minutes, the odds of gaining the best TIMIEs are still lower while the weakest TIMIEs retain the highest chance. However, negative TIMIEs are added into the pool, and while 3x, 4x, and 5x TIMIEs have a combined total of 6% chance, the 2x TIMIE has a 17% chance by itself, making it common enough to appear at least once through a Somnium. From 3 minutes to the last 90 seconds, the negative TIMIEs drop considerably, with 3x, 4x, and 5x having a 2.5% chance while x2 has a 4% chance; likewise, the [50] TIMIE drops considerably from 13.5% to 2%, and most of the other TIMIEs increase to rebalance it. By the last 90s, the negative TIMIEs had been shrunk by half, and the more valuable TIMIEs have substantially increased.

Pool SWaiN[]

Pool SWaiN, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE_A4, is a TIMIE pool exclusively used in PSYNCIN' IN THE SWaiN. All TIMIEs found in this pool are fixed value TIMIES [n], with no fractions or negative TIMIEs to be found. During the first 3 minutes, [30] TIMIEs are the most common, with [20] and [40] closely following, and [1], [10], and [50] at the bottom; this makes both the most helpful and the most harmful TIMIEs slightly rarer than normal, with the general average being more common. From 3 minutes to 90 seconds, the [20] and [10] values become more prominent while the [30] and [40] drop, and the [50] TIMIE is removed altogether. In the last 90 seconds, [40] is removed as well, as [10] and [20] become dominant and the [1] TIMIE rises above the [30].

Pool CAPTaiN[]

Pool CAPTaiN, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE_B6, is a TIMIE pool exclusively used in PSYNCIN' IN THE CAPTaiN. The values of TIMIE found in this pool change every 90 seconds, splitting the Somnium into 4 quarters of time. During the first quarter, negative TIMIEs have a 28% chance of dropping from the pool, with the beneficial TIMIEs of [10] and 1/6 being uncommon. In the second quarter, the negative TIMIEs' odds decrease from 28% to 23%. In the third quarter, negative TIMIEs drop from 23% to 10%, along with the decrease chances of a [20] TIMIE and the addition of a [1] TIMIE into the pool. The final quarter removes the x6 and [20] TIMIEs altogether, with x2 and x3 having a 3% chance together and the [1] and 1/6 values increasing.

Pool VILLaiN 1[]

Pool VILLaiN 1, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE_D3_1, is a TIMIE pool exclusively used in PSYNCIN' IN THE VILLaiN. In this pool, the values present change every 30 seconds for a total of 12 Pool phases. In each of these phases, all available TIMIEs have precisely the exact same amount of odds of dropping, with those odds increasing as more TIMIEs are removed. At the beginning, the only TIMIEs available are 1/2, 1/3, [40], and [50], which are not the most useful variety. Each phase introduces one or two TIMIEs of better value, and the following phase removes one or two TIMIEs of higher value as it inches closer to better TIMIE drops. At the last 30 seconds of the Somnium, Pool VILLaiN A drops 1/7 and [10] TIMIE exclusively at 50% odds each.

Pool VILLaiN 2[]

Pool VILLaiN 2, internally labeled as ITEM_RATE_D3_2, is a TIMIE pool exclusively used in PSYNCIN' IN THE VILLaiN. In this pool, any available TIMIEs are also measured in exactly the same values, making them all equal to each other. The first 3 minutes count as one phase, but the rest of the pool is split in 30 second increments just like in Pool VILLaiN A. At first, the pool of TIMIEs begin with mostly negatives, at x2, x3, x4, and x5, counterbalanced by a meager [30] and a helpful 1/7. Once half the Somnium is complete, the highest tiered negative TIMIE is removed from the pool every 30 seconds, replaced with a more valuable fraction or fixed TIMIE. At 90 seconds, all negative TIMIEs are gone, and the available TIMIEs rest at 1/8, 1/9, 1/10, [20], and [10]. Within the last 30 seconds, only the 1/10 and the [10] remain.
